Gentlemen..You can't fight in here..This is the war room.
One of my all time favorite movie quotes. 🙂

A couple notes:
-The B-52 was not the plane that dropped the bomb on Japan; that was the B-29 (the B-52 wasn't invented until 1952)
-The lipstick, stockings, and gold are probably included in the survival kits in the event that the crew have to barter/trade where they land, or possibly bribe a guard

Nylons and lipstic were a luxury in Soviet Union, so they were added to trade with locals for shelter food or transportation.
I kind it fascinating that westerners dont know how poor our part of the world was. When I tell people that toilet paper was rare and therefore expensive they don't believe. Yes, we used cut newspapers. Lipstic was rare, meat was rare. Lipstic and nylons are small and lightweight but worth a lot, good items in the survival pack.

Nice reaction. Peter Sellers was one of a kind. A lot of context is lost today, but growing up during the Cold War, all of these characters and caricatures are familiar from that era.

As a B-52 crew member, the scenes on board were VERY realistic.

He was calculating the radioactive decay "half life" with a circular type slide rule (what we used before handheld electronic calculators).

The song that you were wondering about and which is heard throughout the movie is When Johnny Comes Marching Home. It's from the American Civil War.

I was a kid during the Cold War. We were too often reminded that the world could start coming to an end within 30min of any moment, day or night. A very dark comedy indeed. And a crazy time. I'm surprised we're still here. That's for this reaction video.

This was a Black Comedy/Satire on what was going on during the Cold War in the 60's. The reason for Ripper going off was the Flouridation of public water by the US to lessen the chances of Tooth Decay. Some people opposed it but it has become commonplace. Tensions between the US and USSR were high in the 60's. I remember as a kid, my Dad stocking the basement with canned goods during the Cuban Missile Crisis as it seemed we would soon be kissing our little butts goodbye! I guess you had to be there then.

Peter Sellers will always be Inspector Clouseau to me, but he is absolutely brillant in Being There. No joke!! Powerful movie and a really great actor😀😀😀

A "Wing" is a military term for describing the size of an aircraft unit that is assigned to a particular base. During the 1960s, the US had about 1,000 B-52's stationed at several different bases around the world. So, the U.S Air Force had several Strategic Bombardment Wings which were each assigned dozens of B-52's. As part of the US nuclear deterrent, 1/3 of the bombers would be in their hangers for routine maintenance, 1/3 would be conducting training and on alert status, and the remaining 1/3 would be loaded with nuclear bombs and flying air patrols in case of a surprise nuclear attack by Russia.

Many years ago, the "Survival Packs" sold as military surplus to civilians were very popular, because on rare occasions the government agency responsible for selling excess military property would make a mistake and forget to remove the gold.

One of the few movies I would call a slow burn comedy. Peter Sellers is an absolute joy in any movie he is in, but this one especially. Excellent choice, if your looking for more classic comedies, I would heavily consider watching Paper Moon it’s an absolute joy to watch and both leads give great performances.

Those old computer were reel to reel magnetic tape - using the same principles and tape they used in cassette tapes years later.

The best acting performance ever. Peter Sellers portrayal of three different characters, RAF Officer Mandrake, the President and of course Dr. Strangelove.

This film has 4 "tour-de-force" performances: Sellers, Scott, Slim Pickens, Sterling Hayden. Not too many films can boast that!!

I love the reactions of people who see this movie for the first time. Especially during the scene of Major "King" Kong sitting on the bomb when the bombay doors open. Everyone has the same surprised look on their face, and they're thinking "How is he going to get out of this?" And then the bomb drops, and their facial surprise immediately turns to complete shock. It is such a phenomenal plot twist! I saw this movie as a teenager, and I was completely astounded the whole time Major Kong was riding the bomb all the way down to the Russkie missile base.

What is never mentioned is that Dr Strangelove is a comic take on an earlier film called Failsafe starring Henry Fonda which is a great film in its own right.

@twoheart7813 4 years ago

Fail Safe is a great movie & was the counter to Dr Strangelove though much more serious

@tripfarmer9508 4 years ago

I watched this movie after the Russian invasion of Ukraine and I loved it. It's hilarious and now has become all the more relevant today with the current nuclear posturing by some nations.

Slim Pickens used to sneak out and ride and rope in the rodeo when he was a teenager. He used a different name so his father wouldn’t find out. That’s how he got his stage name. That’s why he was good in so many western movies.
