What happened to the Cockneys of East London?
East Ham has changed dramatically over the past few decades. In this video, I explore East Ham and East London to see how immigration, migration and changing demographics have transformed the area and its culture.
From the traditional Cockney identity of East London to the huge South Asian, African and Eastern European communities that now call Newham home, I take a look at what has changed, what remains and how local people feel about it.
I also explore the wider debate around immigration, multiculturalism and the rise of Reform UK, and ask whether the old East End identity is disappearing or simply evolving.

I’m an ex muslim from London, I left the UK for 2 years and wanted to show you around some other places you’ve not seen.
Shame I can’t get in touch, I also feel mass immigration has changed the UK and I left bc I felt safer abroad than in Britain
I think of them as embodiments rather than actual gods, lessons to think about.
Everyone was very welcoming apart the the one place, that's the thing about Hindu and Sikhism, just open and happy to explain and share but not impose.
I miss all this in your video, real Indian, Punjabi, Gujerati food.
Your explanation of why and how the cockneys left is very informative, didn’t know that, bit of social engineering, livelihood of one goes and bring in another. It is a dilemma, individually wonderful, collectively no longer what, where, who it was!!!
