I once saw a t-shirt that said "the mayor in Jaws was still the mayor in Jaws II...local votes matter"

I'm not sure younger audiences appreciate how hard it was to crush a steel beer can in your hand before everything became aluminum.

This movie still kicking ass after 50 years 👍

Saw it in a packed theater after waiting in line with hundreds of people for hours. Wouldn't trade that memory for anything.

Robert Shaw, who played Quint, was one of those acclaimed hard drinking British actors of the post-war period. He had a substantial theatrical career, and though this is the film role he is best remembered for, he won an Oscar for A Man For All Seasons, playing Henry VIII. He was also a successful novelist. He had three wives and eleven children. He died two years after Jaws came out aged 51.

With Quint, this was the shark version of Ahab & Moby Dick. By the final act... just pure obsession to pursue it to both of their ends.

Ben Gardner - providing jump scares for half a century.

This movie was the very first summer blockbuster, which set the bar for all summer blockbuster films to come.

Quint's monologue is a gift to those learning the art of screenwriting. When the right words meet with the right actor.. JAWS will continue to hold up for generations of viewers.

Quint's monologue was actually filmed over two nights because he was very drunk the 1st night. There are portions of both edited together brilliantly. If you pay real close attention, you can tell the parts where is really drunk.

The symbolism in the story regarding Quint is the same as the obsession Captain Ahab had in finding Moby Dick. Quint was obsessed with killing this shark and he wasn't going to let anyone stop him. That's why he smashed the radio

@37:09  The whole harpoon bit wasn't meant to actually kill the shark with the harpoon.  It's meant to put a barrel float on the shark, that will wear it down.  Quint alluded to having to use two barrels "on a sixteen-footer off Montauk", so this is clearly his preferred method.

Re: Quint and the radio: he was a bit crazy to begin with, but I think it's his telling Hooper and Brody the Indianapolis story that tips him over the edge. He likely hasn't told anyone that story for years, if ever, and now telling it in the midst of the greatest shark hunt of his life resurrects all that horror and trauma. After that, the quest to kill the shark is HIS, no one else's. Certainly not the Coast Guard's.  After telling the Indianapolis story, he in effect transforms from a deeply traumatized man with a justified hatred of sharks into a full-blown Captain Ahab. The shark is an unstoppable force of nature; Quint is now an unstoppable force of vengeance and obsession.

As a child in 1975, seeing this….nuff said.
This film is iconic.

I went to the theater several times to see it in summer of '75. Loved it!

4:30 one house phone. One police line. He is the police chief.

Jaws is great because its two movies in one. The first half is a thriller about a shark terrorizing a community and the second half is about three very different men who kind of hate each other bonding to kill a monster.

Steven Spielberg Directed "Duel" in 1971.

The kid that said “he made me do it” is now the mayor where this was filmed. The reporter on the beach is also the author of the book JAWS

“He’a taking a nap” is my new favorite way to say “he’s passed out drunk”
