Longyearbyen isn't like anywhere I've filmed before. Polar bear warning signs on the edge of town, mountains that never really let go of their snow, and a way of life built entirely around the Arctic. In this video I walk you through the town itself, what's actually there, how people live this far north, and what surprised me most about spending a day in a place this remote.

This is the first video from my Svalbard trip, more coming soon covering the museum, coal mining history, and an ATV safari across the arctic tundra.

Fun fact: It's tradition to leave your car keys in the car, and the car unlocked in Svalbard so people can find refuge if they come upon a polar bear in the streets

Amazing footage Katie! In the boat you were glowing with excitement and joy, while the individual behind you looked a bit scared at first. I'd be that person behind you, but your infectious sense of adventure would surely rub off and calm me to no end! Your ongoing enthusiasm and that man's expansive smile at the end as you were cresting waves brought my heart pure happiness!
