In this video, I analyze, fight, and rank EVERY Secret Character in Mortal Kombat history. That includes the OG Reptile from the very first game through the pink ninja Floyd in the latest Mortal Kombat 1. The parameters primarily come down to vibes more than an intricate system that dissects each one.

Some of these characters are awesome, while the fights are rage-inducing ... to say the least. So join me as we break down the many Secret/Hidden Characters across the last 30+ years of Mortal Kombat.

Who is YOUR favorite MK Secret Character? ✍⬇🥩

5:35 Hi, very old man here. I was very much in the arcade scene back then, and I can tell you it was mind blowing. It seemed like the most important thing in the world to us. My actual arcade Reptile sightings were rare, but I definitely witnessed a few hints and people actually playing against him, and it felt like witnessing one of the great mysteries of the world. Every magazine wrote about it. I guess what I'm trying to say is that the Mortal Kombat hype is not something that was inflated in retrospect. It was real and palpable.

“It wasn’t easy, I did curse a few times, but it was doable.” Story of my life, bro 😂

I can report from the original MK era, before everyone knew about the fatalities and how to do them, the other players in the arcade would share how their friend threw up from seeing someone's head being ripped off, or that someone saw the flags when an arcade attendant reset the cabinet and that it had some special information or other. So even though the reptile appearances were rare, you heard about it through word of mouth.

I only saw one person fight him in the arcade, and there was a big crowd around the machine. He lost pretty comprehensively, but everyone was so pumped that they got to witness it. Huge event back then.

It’s unfortunate that true secret characters like the early games are fundamentally dead. Because they’ll either get advertised and aren’t really secrets, or they’d get data mined before the game even comes out somehow and will be leaked

Finding "kanoob saibot" almost felt like finding a secret character. 😂

“Rain can be found in the graveyard” is pretty funny because it can both literally mean that there’s rain as a backdrop in the graveyard stage, but it can also mean Rain is in the graveyard as in he’s a scrapped character that was never actually made

Purple Rain and Pink Floyd. Interesting that they did this again after all this time.

With Reptile, the rumor was spreading through arcades, but no one had all the details right. We kept trying for double flawless+fatality no block, but didn't know about the moon silhouette. I was at a convenience store with my buddy, and I did it again, and right as I said, "see, it doesn't work", then the "you have found me, now prove yourself came on."...and we freaked out! One of my favorite arcade moments as a kid.

Arcade Kollection AI violated me way more than the original ports ever did 😢

I laughed WAY too hard at the Tri-Borg joke.

I was born in 84 and was absolutely an arcade rat. "Toasty!" in that obnoxious voice was likely the earliest meme I remember spreading through my school and social circle. Yes I spent far too many quarters playing this game, yes my parents were often upset about it. They really didn't like me spending all my lunch money on "Primal Rage" and especially "Time Killers". Want to see a crazy game, look into that last one. It's a rabbit hole to put it lightly. Not for the faint at heart. I don't know how games like that were accessible to children my age in the early 90s. Oh and those guide books were a huge part of my life growing up, as well as the instruction booklets included in the purchase of cartridge games. Damn life was so simple back then.

Waaay back in the pre-WWW days of the Internet you actually had Usenet newsgroups discussing the locations of specific arcade machines, including MK arcade machines, as well as move combos, finishing moves, and even Reptile. I was lucky enough to have a friend whose father was an early tech guy, so he knew how to access the video game and arcade newsgroups and read-up on special moves. Reptile was def. something of a legend. Little did we know the video game arcade scene was in the latter stages from it's inception in the 70s. A memorable day was if you and your friends crowded around an MK machine in the local Burger King and would by chance observe the AI in the game perform a finishing move that no one had yet seen. Then someone would get a magazine with cheats, and we'd all photocopy it at a newspaper shop that had a copier. Simpler times.

There was also a secret version of Sonya in original MK. If you forced a fight against Reptile as an endurance round, she was his partner. It was a weird green silhouette of Sonya and she was crazy fast and hard to kill. Some people used to claim she was actually Jade, but I've never seen anything to confirm that. At the time people just called her "Exclusive Sonya."

Kano as the original palette for Noob in original MK3 perhaps was the most suitable sprite as Richard Divizio (Kano's actor) who was bald and slim whereas Sub Zero with no mask had hair and was more buff looking. It would be nice if we had some easter egg in the next MK for that, like Kano in the current timeline opens Bi Han's tomb and says something like "you and I arent that much different"

I remember playing Mortal Kombat 2 back in the day on my Super Nintendo, and my uncle who was obviously older than me was a teen around the arcade scene. He told me the secret to fighting Smoke and I tried it so much but what he told me was if you press “Start” when Dan Forden says “Toasty” you can fight smoke. He didn’t know the second half of it being it had to be at the portal stage. Anyway I tried relentlessly for idk weeks, months idk and then one day it happened and my uncle was nowhere near me. I remember being so fucking excited and then Smoke continued to obliterate my ass lol I had to be like 5-6 years old

Seeking to fight the secret bosses of the trilogy Is like opening the puzzle box from Hellraiser, and you get the meat and potatoes of the suffering too.

Another kid of the 90's here: It was word of mouth at first and then more info would be published in gaming and computer magazines. Never got to see or play OG reptile though.
