This afternoon (July 16, 2026), we were dispatched to a field fire in the Nievenheim district, near the city limits of Neuss.
Upon the arrival of the first responders, a baler and the adjacent stubble field were already ablaze. The heavy smoke was visible from a great distance. Due to the situation, additional units were requested while crews were still en route to the scene.
The fire spread rapidly across the dry stubble field, covering an area of approximately 4,000 square meters.
Firefighting operations involved the use of multiple hose lines and the water cannons from various water tender trucks. This allowed crews to contain and ultimately fully extinguish both the fire in the baler and the field fire. Later in the operation, a drone unit assisted with the final extinguishing work, enabling the aerial identification and targeted suppression of remaining hotspots.
We also received support from the agricultural sector; tractors and cultivators were used to create firebreaks.
Units deployed included the command service, the full-time fire company, and the volunteer fire companies from Nievenheim, Straberg, Delhoven, and Stürzelberg. During the operation, the City Center fire company maintained basic fire coverage for the municipal area from the main fire and rescue station.
