🔥 For the third time, farmers are protesting at this exact location… and once again, the fire brigade is called out.
This incident starts a little differently than usual for firefighters Henk and Tom.
Our fire engine is a 4x4 off-road vehicle that can also be used to fight wildfires and other vegetation fires. To maintain the specialist skills needed to drive such a heavy vehicle safely across difficult terrain, our drivers regularly take part in dedicated driver training.
On this particular day, Henk and Tom have been out with the fire engine for one of these training sessions. As they return, they drive back into Lunteren and report to the emergency control centre that the vehicle is available for calls again.
And then the timing could hardly be more remarkable…
🚨 Almost immediately, the pager goes off.
Henk and Tom are already sitting in the fire engine. They first drive to the fire station to pick up the rest of the crew before heading to the incident together.
On the way, it quickly becomes clear that this is a serious fire. A huge column of black smoke can already be seen from a long way away.
🔥 And the location looks very familiar…
It is Prinsjesdag, the day when the Dutch government’s plans for the coming year are presented in The Hague. At the same time, farmers are protesting at various locations across the Netherlands.
Parts of the agricultural sector have been deeply concerned about the future of their farms for some time. Issues including nitrogen regulations, permits, manure policy and the ability to continue or develop their businesses have created considerable uncertainty.
Farmers’ protests are taking place at several locations across the Netherlands on this day. At some locations, fires are lit to draw attention to the concerns facing the agricultural sector.
There is also a protest in our response area. And this particular location is no longer unfamiliar to us: this is the third time a farmers’ protest has taken place here.
When we arrive, we are faced with a substantial fire. Flames are reaching high into the air as a huge column of thick black smoke rises into the sky.
🚒💦 For us, the reason behind the fire does not change our job: bring the fire safely under control.
The crew gets to work and begins the firefighting operation. In the background, another familiar image from farmers’ protests during this period can be seen: the Dutch flag flying upside down. 🇳🇱
In this video, you join us right from the unusual start with Henk and Tom. They have only just driven back into Lunteren after their driver training and reported the fire engine available again when the pager goes off. First to the fire station to pick up the rest of the crew, and then straight towards that enormous column of black smoke.
What will we find when we arrive, and what will it take to bring this major fire under control?
🚒 Welcome to Brandweer Lunteren
