I love the 4kids voice cast best too. Interesting how the 4kids opening starts with the line "close your eyes" while Cinelume starts with "open your eyes". I'll also admit it took me way too long to realise Faragonda was a play on Fairy Godmother.
I still see the episode Musa sings 'feels like magic' and the crowd starts harmonizing Sometimes its the little things like that - that really make a series Little moments of magic
I wish they'd always referenced Stella's attempt to create a new shade of pink whenever they needed to shut down one of her ideas later on in the series 😭 Also I've ALWAYS loved how robotic Tecna's voice sounds at 34:50 (tHeRe'S ONE two blOcks awAy, use MY cArD 🤖)
I called people who bullied me in kindergarten "fashion fiasco" all the time. I remember I snuck downstairs every saturday morning, made cereal and watched 4kidz for hours.
4kids is my favorite Winx Dub! Flora calling everyone "sweetie" and Stella having fun in the bavkground, like her going to rodeo camp. ALSO HER SOLVING THAT PUZZLE IN SEASON 2 BECAUSE SHE LOVES FASHION!
No matter how many times I rewatch season one, I’m never prepared for how bizarre it feels to not have Aisha (Layla in this dub) in the show yet. Granted, her absence is a necessary evil for her character journey and her relationships with the other girls. But it always feels weird to comeback and not see all six of them. At least her not being present is better than letting us know her food’s in the fridge cartwheeling intensifies
I think this is the first time I've seen someone actually explain American school years, and I will agree that they're kinda weird- Here in Italy you have elementary, middle, high school and university, and each year is just named whatever year number you're going trough in the class, so for example in your 3rd year of high school you would say you're in your third year. The whole 'freshman-junior-senior' thing sounds really funny ngl
I will forever sing the praises of Caren Lyn Tackett (nee Manuel at the time of recording) who was versatile enough to convincingly voice Stella, Darcy, Mirta, and Chatta throughout this dub. You rarely find such incredible versatility these days where each character sounds so uniquely distinct from each other. We rightfully talk about Lisa Ortiz's incredible acting chops, but the whole of 4kids actors were all such masters of their craft with such top notch range. Few showed that range better than Caren.
This voice cast is objectively the best out of the entire series. Each is very well suited and while some choices are obvious ie. mellow for Flora, valley girl for Stella, and british accent for Tecna; it helps them all stand out and sound distinct. In most other dubs, the girls mostly sound the same with a few exceptions.
Flora's charaterization (what little she ever got) is best in season 1 imo. She isn't the shy wallflower they turn her into for literally the rest of the series (even in seasons 2 and 3 😬). She's definitely the team mom and sometimes switches off with Tecna for being "second in command". Flora is kind but isn't afraid to stand her ground like she does in the other other season. I loooovvveee the attitude she gives Stella at the end of the episode when they found out about Stella and Bloom's lie. She's also the one that leads the team when they rescue Bloom from the forest later in the season. As a Flora stan, I must savor what few crumbs I can get.
Musa's dialouge is definitely an indefensible part of the 4kids dub. Her butchered try hard AAVE is very grating and I'm so glad they cut that shit out in seasons 2 and 3.
Lastly the line at the end when Grizelda says "but I thought magic disappeared from Earth centuries ago?" That line lived in my head as a kid, I thought that was so cool, I was always wondering when they were going to explain why magic was no longer on Earth. Love the 4kids change about Daphne being the original keeper of the Dragon Fire and giving it to Bloom to keep it from the Ancestral Witches. I agree with the fan theory that Daphne not only sent Bloom to Earth but also sent her to the future to protect her. Instantly fixes the timeline plot holes.
