Pulp and history lessons? We need more of that plz

That excellent 'Touch of Evil' art was also used for the Italian film "Lust of The Vampire" (1957) which was an early Italian horror film that Mario Bava did cinematography on. I do have a single 60s or 70s Sexton Blake paperback around here somewhere!

What a fascinating look into the past and a terrific unboxing.

Jamie and Kush’s handshake? (Victoria Beckham voice) MAJOR

Rather amazing that I can't recall having heard of Sexton Blake before.  Putting Sexton Blake and the Great War on my to buy list.

What a lovely gift. The books may not be my genre, but anyone should appreciate the rarity of those publications.. those little pamphlets are so delicate, and they were not prized possessions in the first place...it's simply amazing they have survived for so long. The oldest is 120 years old.. and survived two world wars!  Please do read them.. carefully, with gloves, and preserve them air tight and in the dark after. The way it was packaged, in chronological order, with the little history lessons along the way, you can just feel the love for the material. I'm glad I'm not the only one who appreciates not only the glorious hand drawn covers and illustrations, but also the old advertisements.

Awesome that Mark Hodder is  expanding your pulp knowledge. Kudos to him!
Your delight is very evident from your expressions as you pluck each item from the box.
Thanks for sharing your  unboxing!

This is the first time I have heard of Sexton Blake. Thanks

Maybe I just have the sence of humor of a 12 year old boy but the way you enunciated “pubic hair” like a newscaster made me lol

I have a really odd fascination with the whole transition-to-sound period of cinema, so I imagine I'd have a good time with that "Talkie Murder Mystery" one.

That looks like a great collection that you've received, Olly!!! I hope you enjoy!!! 👍😆

He "took pity on you?" 😂 I wonder how many he would have sent had it NOT been for the challenge!

Other than that, those are definitely some tempting-looking books and am interested in giving Mr. Blake a read sometime.

Excellent boxful!

Parts of that video were very ASMR. What a great collection and some beautiful covers. I laughed when you pulled out the magnifying glass. I'd recommend a magnifying sheet for those tiny print journals. They sell them in those journal sizes. And, yes, Aero candy exists in the US but usually in the international food aisle.

I bought a Sexton Blake in a second hand bookshop last year. All I knew about the character was a BBC tv show I vaguely remembered from the late 70’s/early 80s & the rather jolly 1938 movie with the wonderful Tod Slaughter, but he was a contemporary of Sherlock Holmes, right? So I was expecting Hansom cabs, gaslight & fog shrouded London streets. Only the book was written in the 1960s, set in the 60s, and Blake was driving in a cross country car rally across Europe. Not quite what I was expecting! 😂

We have aero bars in Australia.  I remember the first time I had 9ne, I was very ill lol. I also had a flavoured milk as well. The combination was too much for my stomach

That was an awesome unboxing video!! Will readers chuckle at our books in 100 years? 😅
Do you know if we have any publications that are so prolific today?  Everything seems to be in book form these days instead of a monthly or weekly publication.
I suppose it shows how important reading was for past generations. Maybe before public libraries were in most every city.
Thanks for sharing, this was fun!

Moorcock is great, though I do think his Starship Stormtroopers essay is too harsh on Tolkien, for reasons that would take my own essay to get into. Will definitely check out some sexton blake. sounds fun

Great video, and what a gift! I’ve a few Sexton Blakes, mainly the 60s paperbacks, and a hardback collection of the Victorian stories. I really must get into them after this video.

Very envious of that box of Blake. The 1920s is the peak period, and my collection of the SBL's starts in the late 1940s.
I have all the newer books Mark sent you. I really hope the Anthony Skene Zenith the Albino novel gets reprinted at some point. The Savoy Books version goes for a fortune!
I was pleased to see that the story papers looked like they'd had the staples removed. They cause so much damage once they go rusty, so you're better off without them.
Mark's not kidding about the magnifying glass.
I may be tempted to join you in a read of both versions of Carribean Crisis. I remember buying my copy of the original version in a job lot of 20-odd SBL's that cost me about £1 each. At the same time I saw a copy of just that issue on ebay for £47. This was some years ago. I also had to correct another seller who was selling several of the issues written as by "Desmond Reid" as all being by Moorcock. It was a house name, and only Carribean Crisis was by Michael Moorcock.
