the production quality of the computer game sections is insane

Came for Map Men and now I’ve accidentally moved to Wales 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿

It's important to note that Enrique didn't actually speak in a Filipino language when they were at the Philippines, contrary to what the Filipino man in the video spoke to Enrique which was Filipino. He actually spoke in Malay which was the lingua franca of Southeast Asia at the time.

Something that wasn't mentioned is that the cloves carried by the last ship of Magellan's expedition (commanded at that point by Juan Sebastián Elcano) were worth several times the total cost of the expedition, making it a very profitable commercial enterprise.

"so what are we doing tonight, Spain?"
"the same thing we do every night, Porty. TRY TO TAKE OVER THE WORLD."

When you showed that graphic of Spain and Portugal splitting the world in two I was half expecting a joke about how Spain didn't realize that Portugal now actually owned Spain.

I love that Daft Punk's "Around the World" appears as further reading

In Spain we are taught that Juan Sebastián Elcano was the first to circumnavigate the Earth, since he was the captain of the expedition when  it arrived back in Spain (really, he was captain of the only ship left standing at the end, many others acted as captains at some point and also died, that expedition was truly a bad time)

The production quality is completely unmatched in these videos. Thank you for choosing to produce art where others might've only made a simple infographic at most.

It's easy to see why Magellan and the King of Spain got on so well. They just clicked.

The man who completed Magellan’s voyage was Juan Sebastian el Cano. He was there from the start and from Philippines to Spain is not a short segment and he got the crew back to Spain.

This channel is like if Monty Python ran a geography channel.

Hi everyone, I'm the voice actor for the King of Cebu in this episode. Thanks for having me Jay and Mark! I liked doing this since I'm awaiting my graduation here in Colchester before I return home where I could finally return to my man cave... to eat spicy food

P.S. wow, Mark, you really nailed the phonetics there

Elcano deserved a mention. He was chosen as the leader of the expedition by the survivos even though he was not a nobleman, and he was among the mutineers of St. Julian.
He managed to finish the voyage without supplies, but with the ships full of spices, which made them rich. Also avoiding the portuguese around Africa, although 1 of the ships was captured.

15:26 R.I.P Mr Swan. You shall not be forgotten, you made a great student in Mark 😊🎉

"Yours rebelliously," Gonna sign all my work emails like this from now on

The Spanish guitar rendition of Pinky and the Brain at the end.... *Chef's kiss*.

There are two kinds of firsts in history, the first man to do a thing, and the first Englishman to a thing

It's worth noting that the return trip for Magellan was basically trying to escape portuguese ships. They were being hunted down since they left the spice islands, as they were a spanish ship filled with cloves from the portuguese side of the Treaty. It's why they don't stick to the coast like Drake's trip, and instead go through open seas as a way to avoid their pursuers.
