This is exactly what I expect of rail transit in a city dominated by the auto industry.

Not gonna lie this seems like a pretty creative idea for public transit. It definitely stands out.

Detroit looks nicer than the image presented of it by the media!

I visited Detroit back in Spring Break 2019 for a FIRST robotics world championship after my high school robotics team qualified and when I was there, I loved downtown, Detroit-style pizza is honestly my favorite style of pizza (and I say this as a New Yorker born to NJ parents) and it definitely has a lot of potential! Some of the things you mentioned were added because of the 2024 NFL Draft.  Realtime tracking, each station received upgraded public address and video surveillance systems, new passenger information displays and interactive kiosks, color-changing lights were installed on guideway support columns along Larned Street and Grand Circus Park, and five stations received large exterior murals as part of the Detroit City Walls public art program.  The station signs have Arabic because Metro Detroit has a huge Middle Eastern community! Dearborn's sizeable Arab community started as Lebanese people who immigrated for jobs in the auto industry in the 1920s, and of more recent Yemenis, Palestinians, and Iraqis. Hamtramck also has a big Muslim community, with immigrants from Yemen, Bangladesh, and Pakistan. In 2023, Dearborn became the first Arab majority city in the US, while Hamtramck became the first Muslim-majority city in the US in 2013.

Wish you had Detroit-style pizza! Detroit-style is similar to deep dish but it's rectangular! Its car industry is why Detroit style pizzas are shaped rectangular! It was invented in 1946 at a place called Buddy's by Gus Guerra. Gus was searching for a high-end pizza pan to create the perfect pizza until he realized something. Detroit's auto assembly plants used blue steel utility trays used to hold parts (like nuts, bolts, etc). For these plants, they were just a thing to hold parts...to Gus, it was a Sicilian-like deep dish pizza.

Yeah, the DPM was meant to be part of a bigger plan. Plans included an underground subway that would've been built from downtown to New Center, where it would transition into an elevated rail line running to McNichols (Six Mile). From there, it would've been a street-level light rail and extend beyond Detroit and into Royal Oak, and possibly later into Pontiac (this "Woodward-Michigan service" would've included lines to Detroit Metropolitan Airport and a Fort line towards Pennsylvania Rd in Southgate), with additional rail lines running on Grand River Ave, Mound Road, Harper Ave, and Gratiot Ave, and commuter lines from Detroit to Ann Arbor and Port Huron. However, it and the suburbs couldn't decide on anything for the 600 million promised by Gerald Ford, and so only the circulator got built and the money was withdrawn by Reagan. So the QLine built in 2017 was indeed a step closer to that old vision. Now as mentioned, the QLine is still useful, it serves Wayne State University, Fox Theatre, Amtrak, Little Caesars Arena, and is walking distance from the Lions and Tigers stadiums as well from Grand Circus Park. But being curbside and not being in the median for most of its length hurts it and slows its down, and when asked by transit advocates during the planning, the QLine people were like "Yeah so?", they didn't care, they didn't want it to be true transit, they just wanted a casual touristy streetcar to attract development.

Besides that plan, Detroit has tried many other times to build a subway or an L, like in 1920 when the proposal was vetoed by the mayor (and the council failed to override the veto by JUST ONE VOTE), the vote for a subway (this one was envisioned to be an extensive 21-mile system) was put off the ballot last minute in 1927, 72 percent rejected it in 1929, 68 percent approved in 1933 but the federal government refused to fund it, a scaled-down system was proposed in July 1941 but after Pearl Harbor happened, it fell off the radar, a 1945 plan envisioned subway lines along Woodward and Grand River, but it too didn't happen...yeah. And before this, Detroit had an insane interurban network and streetcar network! By the 1910s, Detroit was the hub of one of the largest unified electrical transportation systems in the world. Detroit United Railways operated what may have been the largest regional electric rail system in the world. It had more than 800 miles of track, more than 200 of them in the city limits of Detroit, where one fare would get you across town, and 600 miles in the high-speed interurban lines. The streetcars were 24 hours a day and ran every few minutes!

Huntington Place is actually an infill station! It opened in November 1988, not July 1987 like the rest! The track was originally built out in the open and later enclosed by the convention center's late-1980s expansion. The track passes above the main convention hall, so passing trains can be heard from portions of the convention floor!

People in the region have been continuing to fight for transit, despite all the times ambitious transit plans have failed! In 2016, a plan was put forward that included lots of BRT, cross-county connector routes, more frequent routes, and even commuter rail to Ann Arbor. Voters in Macomb, Wayne, Oakland, and Washtenaw Counties participated, 894K approved and 911K rejected, but it shows more people are willing to fight for transit! And Detroit officials have considered a reconfiguration of the DPM to connect more of the city like Corktown, and Midtown, as more apartments are built downtown, and considering closing some stations for faster operations.

Statewide transit wise, worth mentioning Amtrak owns a 98-mile (158 km) section of the Michigan Line between Porter, Indiana, to Kalamazoo, while the state of Michigan owns the 135-mile section between Kalamazoo and Dearborn through MDOT, purchasing the section from Norfolk Southern in December 2012. Trains operate between Porter, IN and Kalamazoo at speeds up to 110-mph, the first corridor outside the NEC to operate at high speeds when regular service with such speeds started in February 2012. Michigan purchased the Kalamazoo-Dearborn section to expand on 110-mph service. In May 2021, service at 110 mph began between Kalamazoo and Albion. With Amtrak's Blue Water, Wolverine, and Pere Marquette trains serving the state, and the revival of a Chicago-Detroit-Toronto service, they're awesome!

And if Michigan had a flourishing statewide passenger network, it would further strengthen their economy! Like potential service to Escanaba and Marquette via Green Bay, Wisconsin, and feeder buses connecting other Upper Peninsula places with the stations! Or 110 mph Coast to Coast trains linking Detroit, Ann Arbor, Lansing, Grand Rapids and Holland, by connecting the state’s political, business, cultural and tourism capitals with its major educational hubs, the line would be a dynamo of innovation and economic rejuvenation. Or a line between Ann Arbor and Traverse City that would stitch together the growing population centers in the northwest and southeast, attracting workers in both regions and boosting the tourism industry there. As of the 2020s, about 80 percent of Michiganders live within 25 miles of an Amtrak station. 85 percent live within 50 miles of one. That population density near train stations means Michigan’s railroads are a remarkable, but under-utilized asset. These rail lines serve a mix of bustling small and mid-sized communities, tourist towns, and college towns, so all of them will profit from being more connected. In 2019, the City of Toledo and the Toledo Metropolitan Area Council of Governments commissioned a study of a line running from Toledo to Detroit and Ann Arbor. It demonstrated a would strong demand for commuter-rail service in this heavily-traveled corridor.  A Toledo to Detroit and Ann Arbor line would strengthen connections between three cities that are already closely knit. A Detroit-Toledo-Cleveland service is much needed too!

Now I see why its so small. The Miami People Mover have full stations and trains going both ways with an inner and outer loop also connected to 2 Metro Rail stations. Thanks for mentioning the People Mover! I should have seen this first. Love the high speed ending

West Riverfront station was once called Joe Louis Arena station because it served an arena for the Red Wings arena that no longer exists. The arena closed in 2017. A 25-story residential tower called the Residences at Water Square opened on the arena's site in February 2024. Residents can connect to the DPM and the Detroit Riverwalk. The station also serves the Downtown campus of the Wayne County Community College District, and the Riverfront Towers residential complex, a residential complex with three towers, Towers 200 and 300 built in 1983, and Tower 100 in 1992. The Riverfront Towers is served through an enclosed skybridge to the station

I really hope they never get rid of the People Mover. It's amazing there's as much as there is now, seeing how opposed to public transit the whole region seems to be. I do know there's a lot more to it than people just not liking buses.

Between West Riverfront and Financial District stations, the DPM curves around a circular part of the convention center first built as Cobo Arena for the Detroit Pistons and is also known as the place where skater Nancy Kerrigan was struck with a baton by an assailant hired by rival Tonya Harding's then husband Jeff in January 1994

Cadillac Center station is attached to the parking garage for One Campus Martius, which used to be the headquarters of Compuware before they moved to Southfield in 2022. Its lobby has the world's tallest indoor waterfall, at 114 feet (34.75 meters). Rocket Mortgage, Microsoft, Meridian Health, and Plante Moran are other tenants. The station's large mosaic is made from 26,000 tiles that were originally meant for a brewery that was never built in the 1930s, the family who were trying to build the brewery kept the tiles, and donated them in the 1980s to be used for the station's mosaic.

The reason the Detroit People Mover has signage in Arabic is because Detroit has the highest concentration of Arab Americans and Arab immigrants in the whole country. It’s a nice touch!
