Dude is basically doing “I’m not touching you!” but for racism

There’s this black girl in my class with a robotic prosthetic leg. At the end of syllabus week some freshman goes up to her and just goes “how’s the leg cligger!” It’s been a month, she hates him, he’s still bragging on socials about it. I understand the clanker stuff isn’t real slurs but people bringing it into the real world like this feels very real, and it’s a giant cop out to just be like “well I didn’t actually say anything bad, its a fake slur”. Also roleplaying being an oppressor is a bit of an odd move.

THANK GOD im not the only person who thinks the eagerness to use slurs, even if its for a robot, is gross and weird because wtf

When I first saw "clanker" a few weeks ago I thought "oh haha like Bender in Futurama" and moved on. Why are people role playing racist cops? Why can't people just say "AI bad" without making it gross?

someone in my  d&d group went from joking clanker racism to straight up real racism and we kinda had to like get him out but like i feel stupid now for not seeing it coming

I feel like the biggest difference between the white creators and the black creators is the black creators are mocking racist ppl, the white creators are just laughing at racism

Not even 30 seconds in but the "I know I'm in the right but I feel bad and I need to be validated" is such a real  feeling, I fear I have had the exact same situation on hinge

my jaw dropped so many times in this episode. i find it incredibly disheartening how quick ppl are to participate in what is essentially racism roleplay... and then play it off as if it is not the metaphor they are literally leaning into

I definitely feel like there's a big difference between,
"It's funny because it hurts"
and "It's funny because it hurts others"

I find the whole "clanker" thing really odd. It's basically racism roleplay. I get that the majority of people are just doing it for the meme, but I do wonder if some people are using it as an outlet to voice their no longer socially acceptable opinions, egged on by those who see it as just a meme.

This is literally just "stealth" racism. Its like how Nazis would go on tiktok and talk about gnome hunting but WAY more obvious.

I'm halfway through the ep so maybe this gets brought up later but a big part of the discomfort around those videos is also about how the people making them are, broadly, anti AI. The characters they're playing are implicitly in the right, there's a sense that we as the audience are also supposed to reject the robots, and because the rejection is mapped on actual real life racism and slurs, the next thought is "wait, do you think the real racism is also right?"
It's very weird seeing people like Stanzi Potenza who are ostensibly leftist and against racism use the basis of real racist language (with an added 1950s aesthetic and references to segregation) to create a power fantasy in which a desired social structure is maintained with threats and slurs. It's like... alright, I hate genAI too, but I don't have to imagine it looking like a human so I can kick it out of my diner, you know. I can just hate the thing regular style. The urge to create slurs is at the very least worth raising an eyebrow at, let alone when they're direct references to Black activists and victims of police violence.

the improv scenario is so unfortunately relatable because i'm physically disabled and walk with a limp and wobble and the teacher in our class was like "okay everyone walk like [x]" since there were only a few of us and we knew each other well by that point so we could mimic the way each other walked. anyways when it got to the time to walk like me one classmate started dragging his foot behind him to a very exaggerated degree and everyone laughed and it's like. oh you guys think that's funny to laugh at. okay. cool

The wild thing to me with all these "cops being racist to robots" skits is that you KNOW we will have murderbots replacing all the cops so they can run racial profiling algorithms before we ever get robots that have enough consciousness to be arrested while running errands

"Did you see the inevitable happened" was not the sort of pitch I was prepared for after this week

I LOVE when people critique / analyze the structure of a joke and why it works. Not only is the topic itself infinitely interesting, but comedy is one of the most powerful forms of persuasive speech. It deserves analysis!

I think what gets me is that the comedy is based on "haha we can use these slurs because AI isn't human" and it ignores the fact that these slurs originated because the people who made them did not believe those minorities were human. So it's not a dropping of seriousness that's used in comedy, it's more like a transference.

When I was hearing about the recent 'clanker' trend, I thought it was mildly amusing because I mistakenly thought that it was an escalation of personifying and mocking like; small innocuous robots. Like those food delivery bots just rollin down the sidewalk. Or slinging "personal attacks" at a McDonalds kiosk. I think theres a bit of absurdist humor there; its ridiculous to be rude to and argue with an object. However; in every one of these examples they just like... humanoid robots, in which case my perceived absurdist angle goes out the window.

the jamal 3000 guy actually said "seems like I upset the wokies" and stanzi's video is still up. She hasn't said anything about it
