Before digital cameras and smartphones, taking a picture was only the beginning.
You couldn’t check the screen.
You couldn’t instantly see if someone blinked.
And you couldn’t simply delete a bad photo and try again.
A roll of film had to be finished, taken to a photo lab, handed over for developing, and then picked up days later — sometimes after a week or more.
Only then did you find out what you had actually captured.
In this documentary, we look back at the forgotten ritual of film photography: limited exposures, photo counters, claim slips, one-hour processing, stacks of glossy prints, bad pictures you couldn’t delete, and the arrival of digital cameras that eventually made the wait disappear.
Technology made photography faster, cheaper, and far more convenient.
But when the waiting disappeared, something about the experience changed too.
Once Normal tells the stories behind the everyday things we stopped doing — ordinary routines, habits, and rituals that quietly disappeared as technology changed everyday life.
