When One Wrong Turn Meant You Were Really Lost

Once Normal

Before GPS, one wrong turn could turn a normal drive into a real problem.

There was no blue line telling you where to go. No voice saying “recalculating.” No phone showing your exact location.
Drivers relied on paper maps, handwritten directions, road signs, landmarks, gas stations, and sometimes complete strangers just to find their way again.

In this documentary, we look back at what driving was really like before GPS became normal — planning routes before leaving home, unfolding giant road maps in the passenger seat, missing exits, stopping to ask for directions, and figuring out how to recover when the route went wrong.

GPS made driving faster, easier, and far more convenient.
But it also removed an entire set of everyday skills and behaviors that were once completely normal.
Once Normal tells the stories behind the everyday things we stopped doing — ordinary routines, habits, and rituals that quietly disappeared as technology changed everyday life.
