Outside a Belgian town called Foy, the ground is still scarred with foxholes, filling with leaves every autumn for more than eighty years. The men who dug them broke the frozen dirt with their helmets and bare hands in December 1944. Close to 12,000 of them held the ring around Bastogne, with almost no armor and almost no winter coats, while more than 50,000 German troops closed in. When the enemy demanded surrender, the acting commander answered with a single word. Most people know the word. Almost nobody knows what it cost the men who had to stand behind it.
