Welcome to Episode 8 of The Apple Tree Project 🍎! This week, we tackle one of the most technical and rewarding stages of the entire build so far: reinforcing the subframe and finally getting the composite decking boards down!
Due to the unique layout and irregular angles of this back garden, building this decking frame took a serious amount of brainpower. Every mitre, cut, and angle had to be calculated on the spot. To ensure the structure stands the test of time, we made it completely bombproof—anchoring it with 4-inch posts set in concrete, reinforcing the main joints with endless timber noggins to eliminate any bounce or twist, and laying down heavy-duty weed membrane underneath.
We then collected the composite boards (which barely fit in the van with millimetres to spare!) and got straight into laying them down. Working through hot, clammy weather, scorching sunny spells, and sudden heavy downpours, the team pushed through to get these boards locked in place.
In this episode:
📐 Navigating Complex Angles: Solving tricky geometry and cutting precise mitres on site.
🔨 "Bombproof" Subframe: Concreting 4-inch support posts & fitting noggins to prevent sagging.
🚐 The Tightest Van Fit Ever: Squeezing the full order of composite boards into the van.
🌧️ Weather Battles: Pushing through hot humidity and torrential downpours to keep progress moving.
🪵 Laying Composite Decking: Screwing down boards for that ultimate satisfying transformation moment.
