Flores, it should be noted, attended a new hearing in New York on Thursday where the judge denied her defense's request for house arrest, citing alleged health problems.

The United States also filed new torture charges against Maduro and his wife, adding to the legal case the couple already faces while detained in New York.

Maduro and Flores were accused of drug trafficking and arms trafficking after being captured in a military operation ordered by the Donald Trump administration in Caracas on January 3 and transferred to a jail in Brooklyn.
