If you’ve spent much time wandering the cities of Tamriel, you’ve probably noticed something. From Arena to Oblivion, almost every major city had a Mage’s Guild Hall. The Guild was truly one of the great institutions of Tamriel, bringing magical knowledge and services to the common people. Anyone could simply walk in, buy spells, brew potions, or pay for enchanting services. And any aspiring mage could choose to sign up with the Guild, with the hopes of one day being admitted to the Arcane University. But when Skyrim came out, many players were surprised to see the Guild was gone, with little in the way of explanation. Instead, all we got was the College of Winterhold, which itself was a shadow of its former glory.
So what happened to the Mages Guild, really? How exactly did an organization that spanned every province, fall apart with barely a whimper? Well, the answer is more complicated than you think. Today we’ll trace the history of the Mages Guild from its inception in the Second Era all the way through to its dissolution in the fourth. Along the way, we’ll see how one man’s vision for accessible magic slowly became a political machine — and was eventually destroyed by the very forces it tried to control.
