I visited Myanmar in 1995. It was by far the strangest country I have ever traveled to. The people were very friendly and welcoming. I went to Mandalay, Inle Lake and Bagan…all FASCINATING !!  The electricity would turn off often and unexpectedly. I was on a train from Yangon to Mandalay and the train broke down . We had to wait 12 hours in the burning sun for another engine to get us . By far though , the hottest place I’ve ever experienced is Bagan. Bagan is a vast plain where there are hundreds and hundreds of different temples all spread out. It is quite a spectacular setting, but it is so DAMN HOT . Inle Lake on the other hand was cooler and refreshing. People stand up in boats and row the boat with one leg…amazing ! Schewedagon temple is EXTRAORDINARY !

The lady was not flagging for attention. She was flagging to chase away the insects flying over the food. The coconut stall you visited was not supposed to sell coconut water. I think it was a coconut shop extracting the milk for cooking purposes. Anyway, good for them, and they can read your body language for coconut water 😀😀

I learned about Myanmar from my girlfriend at the time, and while we’re not together anymore I’ve learnt about her wonderful country and her culture, visiting Myanmar is definitely on my bucket list destinations now.

Myanmar is relatively safe for tourists than the local people. The local people can be detained or dragged by force into the civil war whether they support it or not. The living condition is poorer and poorer but the cost is higher and higher for the local people. but these things do not effect the casual tourists directly unless you are journalist or reporter. But I believe you had great time in Myanmar, The hidden gem of South east asia.

There's another reality of Myanmar in the countryside where the civil war is being fought. Very different from Yangon. Thank you for sharing and look forward to the next one.

18:05 Hiya, I’m born and raised in Myanmar so I know a bit. If I’m not mistaken, I think the purpose of ringing the bell is to share merit. In Buddhism we have the whole thing about doing something wholesome and positive for positive merit/positive karma. This can come in the form of donations or even meditating and paying homage to the Buddha. If I remember correctly, we have the belief that we can share the good karma with others. It goes something along the lines of “if anyone hears the sound of the bell, may they be happy and wholesome and gain the good merit that I have generated”.

It’s been years since I’ve been home so I could have inaccuracies but that how I remember it. Hope you see the comment and thank you for visiting Myanmar ❤

I hope to someday visit Myanmar, was in Cambodia just last year and it was a really nice experience, hot as hell during the summer but the people there were very kind. Looks like Phnom Penh was undergoing some massive infrastructural renovations as well as plenty of construction work during that time, so if you’d like to see an up and coming city for a good value I’d highly suggest a visit man.
