The legal reality:
1) Ownership transfers from you to the bank the moment your cash is deposited..
2) Your deposit is treated as a loan from you to the bank..YOU become an UNSECURED creditor, and the bank becomes the debtor..
3) Instead of holding your cash in a secure vault in the bank branch where you deposited your money, the bank issues you a contractual promise (IOU) to pay you back equal value on demand...
What this means for you:
1) Because the bank now owns your money it can do as it pleases with it..such as investing and loaning it out to others...
2) While you no longer own your own money, you retain the legal right to demand your balance back at any time..
3) Your money is protected by the Financial Services Compensation Scheme up to a set amount as long as the bank your money is deposited with is a regulated with the FSCS...
