Patchouli is one of perfumery’s most recognizable materials—but it has far more range than its reputation might suggest.

For this video, I wanted to get away from simply rounding up the usual suspects or trying to identify the “biggest patchouli of all time.” Instead, I’m exploring a group of decidedly patchouli-forward fragrances that show just how differently this extraordinary material can be interpreted.

Patchouli can be earthy and damp, dry and woody, green and aromatic, dark and resinous, polished and elegant, or surprisingly soft and sophisticated. Some of these fragrances are well known; others deserve far more attention than I think they receive.
