I had never heard of Heilung before this reaction, and somehow, even with absolutely no expectations, this was STILL not what I expected.
“Krigsgaldr” felt less like watching a live performance and more like being transported somewhere else entirely. Within minutes, it felt like I had been dropped a thousand years into the past. The rhythms, the vocal textures, the chanting, and the way they continuously layered new sounds into the performance created this almost hypnotic effect. At certain points, I genuinely felt like I was in a trance.
It was terrifying, fascinating, and completely captivating.
What really struck me was how completely committed everything was to creating that atmosphere. Looking at the stage, I couldn’t even identify what I would consider a conventional modern instrument. Everything seemed designed to pull you further into this other world.
This was my first experience with Heilung, so I know essentially NOTHING about them yet. That means I need the Heilung community to educate me. Who are these people? What instruments are they using? What’s the history behind the music? And most importantly, what should I hear next?

What exactly did I just experience? What are the instruments they’re using? How much of what they’re doing is based on actual historical sources? And is the whole “I’ve just been teleported 1,000 years into the past” feeling basically the point?
Most importantly: where do I go next with Heilung? Give me the next performance I absolutely have to see.
