The Southern Trans-Andean Railway was intended to be one of the major rail connections between Argentina and Chile. Today, we travel its tracks from Zapala, Neuquén, to discover what remains of that ambitious project.
In this episode of On Argentine Rails, we arrive in Zapala, explore the station, Kilometer Zero, the free trade zone, and continue along the route of the Southern Trans-Andean Railway, following the tracks to where the railway line currently ends.
A project that aimed to cross the Andes Mountains and connect Neuquén with Chile, but whose history is marked by unfinished works, reactivation projects, and kilometers of track awaiting a new opportunity.

La trocha ancha permite bastante más carga por eje que la métrica y aumenta la estabilidad de los vagones.
El proyecto de un ferrocarril binacional por esa zona es muy antiguo y se estableció un protocolo entre ambas cancillerías para concretarlo.
Por el lado chileno se llegó hasta Lonquimay tras construir el túnel Las Raíces, de unos 4,5 kilómetros de largo. Hacía 1962 se llegó hasta ese pueblo y no se avanzó más.
Actualmente la vía del ramal desde la línea central está desmantelada y algunos tramos se usan como vías para ciclismo.
Al parecer faltó voluntad política y recursos para concluir esta gran obra.

En estos dias la pcia de Neuquén empezará a hacerse cargo de la administración del ferrocarril de la pcia han informado, ya que la nación se lo ha dado para su nueva administración. Espero que esto se haga seriamente poniendo la prosperidad de Neuquén como meta, lo que también daría cierto progreso para los pueblos de allí. Mendoza ha encaminado nuevos proyectos independiente de Nación, que sin ser perfecto, hay avances muy visibles.
Que esto para Neuquén no sea un nuevo fiasco y que funcione !!
Pero hay otro caso, es el ferrocarril que s<lia desde Puerto Deseado (trocha ancha) y ha quedado intrrumpido a la altura de Jaramillo, practicamente en la mitad de la provincia de Santa Cruz, y cuya intención era terminar en Osorno o Puerto Montt (Chile)
