Jaguar XJ12: The Road Back – Episode 2
After 11 years in storage, the moment has finally arrived… will this 1990 Jaguar XJ12 actually start?
Welcome back to Jaguar XJ12: The Road Back, my new series following the recommissioning of this wonderful old V12 Jaguar after being off the road and in storage since 2015.
In Episode 1, we discovered seized brakes, removed all 12 spark plugs and, most importantly, established that the V12 engine wasn't seized. I then started working through the ignition and fuel-injection systems, checking for spark, injector signals and whether the injectors themselves were still operating.
Now it's time to take things a big step further.
Before attempting the first start, there are still a few problems to work through and some important checks to make. After sitting unused for more than a decade, simply putting a battery on it and turning the key isn't something I want to do!
But eventually, there's nothing left to do except try it.
Will this Jaguar V12 fire into life for the first time in 11 years?
And if it does start, what will it sound like? Will it run properly? And what other problems are waiting to reveal themselves after all those years in storage?
This is exactly what The Road Back is all about — working through the problems one at a time, understanding what's wrong, fixing what we can and gradually getting this XJ12 closer to being back on the road.
For anyone new to the channel, I'm Tom, and I've spent 30-plus years working in precision engineering, including many years running my own engineering businesses. I've also been playing around with, repairing and restoring cars since I was young.
TP’s Diary is simply my way of sharing that passion.
The channel follows my adventures with modern and classic cars, particularly Jaguars and their wonderful V12 engines. You'll find hands-on engineering, restoration and recommissioning projects, modifications, fault-finding, road tests and occasionally the opportunity to get behind the wheel of something very special.
So if you enjoy classic Jaguars, V12 engines, engineering and bringing old cars back to life, subscribe and follow the journey.
The engine turns. We have spark. We have injector signals.
But after 11 years of silence… will it actually start?

One of the first things I did was remove the fuel rail and injectors and replace 16 hoses, pintle caps and filters. After 36 years they still looked good. 100 quid for a kit and you can use a soldering iron to melt off the old hoses, quicker than cutting the metal and prevents any scratches.
A PP9 9volt battery is good enough to tap the injector coils, they should all be the same resistance and tap tap tapping away. Ian Tyrell uses the same.
Well done, I shared the elation when it ran on 12 cylinders for more than 4 minutes. 😅😅😅😅
