Hi Jayskii,
Richard was next to Karen the others are the band for the “group” Carpenters. Numerous people were involved in the studio and some were also just for touring. They were the #1 American act in the 1970’s with well over 100M records sold. They had three Billboard Hot 100 #1 and many Adult Contemporary/Easy Listening #1 songs. This song written by Paul Williams and Roger Nichols started life as a song for the Crocker Bank in California. (That video is on YouTube) Richard saw that commercial and recognized Paul’s voice! He knew Paul was also at A&M Records where the Carpenters were signed. He asked Paul if he had a complete song. Paul said yes and the rest is history. This song went to #2 on the Hot 100.
Welcome to the Carpenters. There are many beautiful songs ahead. Thank you for this wonderful reaction!
Joe

The Song is about a young couple who just got Married and their whole life is in front of them.❤

Karen's ability to reach in and touch your soul was and is unmatched. She was a beautiful soul with a voice like a warm hug and as a drummer she was top tier.

Been in love with her since 1971.

Karen is in my opinion the best female vocalist ever. She can sing like nobody else can.

Another star who left us way too soon.

Karen Carpenter was one in a million!  Absolutely one of the best voices of the 20th Century.  Richard arranged all their music.  This song was in all the weddings I went to.  People still use it for weddings.  Their Christmas album is the best.

"We've only just begun.  White lace and promise.   A kiss for luck, and we're on our way"...    Wedding scene.

I was 11 when I first heard this song (in 1970), and I've loved the Carpenters ever since.

My cousin sang this at my wedding in 1972. I lost my husband in  1999 to cancer and my cousin sang it at the graveside.  Was always our song.

This is the music my dad listened to so it’s what I grew up with

The sublime Karen Carpenter, is without doubt.....Once of the worlds greatest female vocalists....I've been a fan since the 70's and still listening in 2026.

I loved this song back in the day.

This was actually commissioned to be used in a banking tv commercial at one point basically selling mortgages to the masses.  It was also the quintessential wedding song of the late 1970's and early 1980's.

I first heard her when I was 6 or so and and 55 years later still the most beautiful voice I've ever heard. Richard, her brother is the one standing next to her. Thanks for the reaction ✌️

She's also a baddest drummer. Check out their 1968 Dancing in the Streets to witness her insane singing and drumming skills.

You got it exactly right about the meaning of the song, J-Ski. Richard Carpenter heard part of the tune on TV in a bank advertisement that aimed to draw young, just-married couples just starting out in life as bank customers. As Joe has already explained, Richard, a song arranging genius always listening for a good song, heard the potential of that "TV jingle" and contacted its writers.

Back in the early 1970's when this song was on the charts, just about everybody came to know it. The reason is because, in that day, music played on the Top 40 radio stations could be anything and everything: pop, rock, soul, R&B, folk, Motown, country, film music, singer-songwriter, comedy-novelty, even instrumentals. If you had a favorite song, you would have to wait until it played, and, during the wait, hear all these different kinds of music. It's very different from today when specific music can be heard on-demand and in playlists often already divided by musical genre. I appreciate your open mind about this old stuff! As you have shown in your reaction, old things can still be good. 😆

This is one of the most beautiful songs of the 20th century. It has been sung at many wedding ceremonies through the years. 😊

It's about getting married and starting the journey through life together. Originally the song started out as a TV commercial for a bank selling loans to newlyweds.

This song was originally written for a Crocker bank T.V. commercial. Richard happened  to see the commercial one day, loved  the music, and knew he could do his own amazing arrangement of it featuring Karen's extraordinary vocal talents. The commercial came and went , but this arrangement raised the Carpenters to their first number one hit on the charts.

Her songs are like lullabies ❤
