Story 1: I’ve worked a couple retail jobs and both of them stressed during training that you do not try to apprehend a thief. The store has cameras and is insured. A lone employee trying to do something can cause them way more problems than a stolen product. Just keep an eye on them, get their license plate, and call the cops

For the lady trying to steal the purse- should have gone crazy on the pressing charges- SHE STOLE YOUR PERSCRIPTION MEDICATION that's a huge charge, and gets her on lists with hospitals next time she needs a prescription of her own.

>"quarters to cauldrons"

babe wake up, a new version of "dollars to donuts" just dropped

Pretty sure that being charged $30 for “not turning off lights” is illegal.  Just for anyone currently working in retail.  Check your state labor laws on this!

The bag story - I don't think going to her job would work... but only because she doesn't seem like someone earning her own living, bet she lives off what her husband makes.

I worked at a bookstore, and I got to ID someone because they bought the ONE BOOK in the whole store that requires it. American Psycho. The dudes were chill and just sorta chuckled at the fact that they had to give ID at a BOOKSTORE

the walkie talkie sloppy toppy absolutely killed me

The story about the purse brings back one of my most insane retail stories to mind. Our store sold super soft xmas socks every winter, always a high demand item, and we sold out within a week or so every time (usually around Thanksgiving).

Older lady runs up to the cashier counter the week before Christmas DEMANDING that we find these socks for her. Will absolutely not hear that we don't keep a secret stash of them in back (stores like making money, so we..you know...sell them). Starts yelling about how she KNOWS me and the other female cashier bought some for outselves and we have to "go get them" and "return them right now" for real customers to buy. I was wearing a pair that day and she honest to God told me to take them off so she could buy them and was mad when we laughed at her.

She yells for our manager, he comes up front, and she demands he return any socks he bought for his wife so she can buy them. He says "I have a husband, and he doesn't wear women's socks." She turned about seven shades of even angrier red and stormed out.

I appreciate that the store didn’t just fire the person with chronic illness’s. I did pick up op saying “more reliable.” Clearly its something serious if the owner, hiring manager, doesn’t want to let them go.

I work at a gas station. If a customer is buying alcohol for a different person we need the other person's id. Usually there's no problems. However once a lady forgot her id, and her mother told her that she would just buy it for her. She said that in front of the cashier. So we couldn't sell alcohol to the mother either and she got mad. The daughter did come back later with id and was very apologetic about her mother

Worked at a gas station, here. They are suuuper strict about id’s because you can also loose your distribution license!

I have a story that just happened last night. I work at an art store and a lady asked where the glue was so I showed her and she didn't have her glasses so she asked what the differences between the super glue were and what ones were good for skin. She wanted to use it to close the cuts on her hand fron eczema. I had to read off all the poison control warnings to convince her not to buy it and to go to the drug store for skin safe medical stuff, not krazy glue!

On the first story, the person who stole was the one to bring it up.  That doesn't seem like a very good idea to me, but idk

When I was 13, a family member used to ask me regularly to go to the local garage/petrol station to get their smokes for them. I got served every time because they knew they were for said family member. 6 months later, the station rebranded so I assume they got closed down for selling to minors. Lol

i am currently in the quiet zone of a train and Oz's commentary on the fancy bag story almost killed me as i tried to swallow my laughter. I don't know what i was expecting but "Go to her place of work and demand she take her clothes off" wasn't on the list 💀

edit: now there's sloppy toppy walkie-talkies is Oz trying to get me kicked out of the quiet zone

For the part about other places not ID'ing him - he's lying. People will try to lie that "X lets me do it without ID, another employee here gives me extra bacon for free, the owner is fine with me paying him back later" etc all the time.

I’ve listened to hundreds of Reddit stories yet every time I am still shocked by the entitlement of these people

The amount of people who casually mistreat retail workers is insane!

On the ID cigarette story, never worked at a gas station but I worked 7 years at a dollar general and I can tell you people get downright hostile when checking for cigarettes.

Apparently I was the only one actually following store protocol even AFTER one of our other cashiers got fined and fired for not ID ing older customers.

Had countless insults thrown at me, threats of getting jumped in the parking lot, and had a guy even take a swing at me only to hit the plexiglass. It was wild
