About the code switching, at home I speak Limburgish, outside of my home I speak Swedish, and on the internet I speak mostly English, although I am beginning to try and do that a bit less and use the other languages I speak more.

My home, we speak English, Spanish and Polish. Father is from Poland and mother from Mexico. We live in Los Angeles. My parents speak to each other in English, and sister and I speak to our folks in Spanish or polish and “code switch”/mix and mash all 3 languages sometimes. I find some words or phrases are better ways to say/describe something. Sister and I are all fluent in 3.

I've learned Norwegian as a German and can say, that Danish is mostly understandable if written (totally different pronounciation) and Swedish ist more or less understandable, both slowly spoken and written.

24:14 Swede here. For Norwegian it is like 80%, danish it is like 30%, the Skåne dialect of Swedish is like 40% spoken but 99% written.

Mr Terry was really hungry during this one, I see

I used to have two Algerian colleagues (I live in the UK), and it was fascinating to watch them have a conversation: it was a mixture of French, Arabic and English, sometimes with more than one language in the same sentence!

The on-screen not that went too fast read was saying that in fact one does have to obey the chinese government in printing their maps in china, regardless of if those maps will be sold in china. It then also said that that may be why their recent book doesn't mention Taiwan.

I'm Belgian and my native language is Dutch but I spend so much time with the English language (gaming, movies, music, internet,...) that I really start struggling with my Dutch, I even think in English. I was never really good at languages at school either. I was good at English, never studied for it and always passed. Never was the kind of student that wanted like 80 or 90 %, 55 or 60% was more than enough for me. I always struggled with Dutch but would be able to pass if I studied but the worst was French, I always failed my French tests and exams and I still can't speak French till this day. Also I had the best and funniest English teacher which also helped a lot to keep my fellow students and I interested in his lessons. He once said I was his favourite student but I always thought that was kind of a joke. By the way he was also my history  teacher. I've got great memories about that teacher and his lessons. He once asked me during business English, " Tell me about your big accident you had", and was like " huh, what big accident?" And then he said, "yeah, the big accident you had," and I said, " I didn't have a big accident." At which he responded with the epic line, " you're not going to tell me you were born like that, right." At which everybody in my class started laughing and I was like, " oh come on man, that's not funny." Yeah that was a very good burn at my expense. Him and I would often take digs at each other, that was kind of our thing. But teachers like that are the ones that you always remember and who can really help shape their students personality and moral. I'm sure that a lot of your students will have fond memories of you as their teacher and your lessons. They might not realise it yet but they will someday.

5:00 I think it’s less about how language affects your own psychology and more about who you’re able to communicate with. I arguably have more in common with a foreigner with the same job as me than I do a billionaire from my own country, but my perception of how similar I am to them will be impacted by how difficult it is for us to talk to each other.

In Gibraltar we speak English as the language of law, business and school. At home and on the streets, we speak Llanito which is a vernacular of Andalusian Spanish, English and several south European languages.

Swedish at home, Swedish in public, English on the internet

As a swed I would say I understand 90% of what is written in Danish and Norwegian. Speaking depends on the person and where they are from. But around 50-70% or so.

I'm from the Netherlands and grew up with Low Saxon; didn't know Dutch until I went to school. In my town I spoke Low Saxon at home and outside. With my friends outside my town I speak Dutch. (at least with the ones who dont understand Low Saxon)

13:50 if you haven't already, look at the map of native populations in North America, there's so many and a lot of them overlap, it's fascinating in the best way

A terrific David Attenborough impression and taking a hammer to a computer were highlights for me. You can't really categorise the vast number of different languages and dialects that can vary quite a lot over just  a few miles. Map men are always terrific.

"There I ruined It" yt channel sang the Toto song Africa but the lyrics were all the nations of Africa.

some manuals in scandinavia kombines norwegian and danish and just shows different words when they are different

Speaking of welsh, Alot of Welsh towns are also Welsh With the Exeptions of Swansea, Cardiff and Newport among others.
Barry is kinda both since Wales says, Y Barri and In english its Barry

Welsh town names that are english have a Welsh translation. Swansea is Abertawe, Cardiff is Caerdydd and Newport is Casnewydd
(Pronounced: Aber Ta Wae, Cai Er Deeth, Cas New ith)

No idea why I am saying this but maybe He will see this and think its interesting

I personaly dont speak different languages at home and in public but my cusins on my mom's side speaks finnish at home and swedish in public, there is not really any reason they HAVE to speak swedish in public it is just that it is the one most here in sweden understands but for official stuff, finnish is legaly required to be available for all documents, even if it is not official language it is an official minority language, these are: Finnish, Sámi languages (there are i think about 20), Meänkieli, Romani Chib, and Yiddish

Wow Mr Terry you ask really good linguistics questions!! 🤓
