Is it America?

I am from ARGENTINA, a country which is in SOUTH AMERICA, so... I am Argentinian and American because I live in the American continent, because the continent is huge and Uruguayan, Brazilian, Venezuelan, etc. etc. are American too. That's all and everybody should understand it very well.

If you are going for historical spin, the longitude problem, how triangles shrinked France, the map that saved most lives and British county names are the most historical of them. Also, who owns Antarctica. I’d recommend the longitude first, but that’s up to patrons.

It's funny that the United States paid so much for this map, considering that North America practically doesn't exist on it, besides the fact that the word "America" was written in South America.

In fact, Waldseemüller's map only proves that South America was called America first.

YESSSS, more map men please, they are toooo good!

To answer your questions:
1. Everyone who is not based in the USA call them Cray-ons ( two syllables!).
2. American mustard is so-called because it is very different from both French and English mustards. French mustards are usually not yellow and contain seeds whereas English mustards are much stronger and pungent. American mustard is so mild that it is little more than a yellow ketchup.

As an English person, I can honestly say I've never said "crayn", I've always pronounced crayon as "cray -  on".

For the sake of Terry and anyone else, here are a couple of the British references here at 16:52:

"Woking" is a large town to the South West of London. Technically in the county of Surrey it's about 20 mins away by train to central London so it's very much Commuter town.  H.G Wells's "War of the Worlds" is set in that general area.

"Bradley Walsh" a celebrity with a long career and many appearances on TV including the UK version of Law and Order!

"Apalachia? No, that's a specific region!" he says to defend using a nonspecific name for a specific region...

America is from Alaska to Patagonia

"Nobody knows about Amerigo Vespucci" I'm from Tennessee, and I've known about Amerigo Vespucci since I was six years old.

What you do if you don't know something in maps is you draw sea monsters there and write "Here be dragons".

As a Brazilian, I say “estadunidense” for people from the United States because it literally means “someone from the United States” in Portuguese.

Because… well… that is what you are: a group of states that united and happen to be in America. The main point is logical interpretation. Yes, you are American, just like I am. The issue is when “American” is used as if it exclusively means “from the United States,” while the rest of us from the Americas are treated like we do not count.

And honestly, Brazilians get excluded from everything sometimes. We are told we are not “American,” then some people act like we are not Latino because we do not speak Spanish — as if Portuguese is not also a Romance language and Brazil is not sitting right there in Latin America like 👁👄👁

The geography part matters too. In Brazil, and in many Latin American countries, we learn America as one continent divided into North, Central, and South America. In English-speaking countries, people are usually taught the seven-continent model, where North America and South America are treated as separate continents. So this is not only a translation issue; it is also a difference in geographic perspective. Other places also use or recognize the one-America model, especially in Latin America and in several Romance-language contexts like Spanish, Portuguese, Italian and French traditions.

And about “there is no English equivalent to estadunidense”: that is part of the problem. English has “U.S. citizen” or “person from the United States,” but it does not have a common everyday demonym as precise and natural as “estadunidense” or “estadounidense.” So the default becomes “American,” and then people act like the rest of the Americas are being dramatic for noticing the erasure.

Also, the whole world does not call people from the United States “Americans” in the same way. In Portuguese, “estadunidense” means “United-Statesian” / “person from the United States.” In Spanish, “estadounidense” means the same thing. In Italian, “statunitense” means “from the United States.” In French, “états-unien” literally points to the United States. In Catalan, “estatunidenc” does the same. In German, “US-Amerikaner” means “U.S.-American.” In Finnish, “yhdysvaltalainen” comes from their word for the United States. In Basque, “estatubatuar” also points to the United States. And in Esperanto, “usonano” means a person from the U.S., while “amerikano” can mean someone from the Americas in a broader sense.

So no, this is not us inventing a problem out of nowhere. Many languages had to create more specific words because “American” is not precise enough when the whole continent also exists.

This lack of linguistic, geographic, and empathetic alignment creates real problems. It makes one country sound like it represents an entire continent. It makes English look neutral when it is actually carrying a very specific cultural perspective. It makes people from the rest of the Americas constantly explain why we also belong to America. And it makes Brazilian identity even more invisible, because we are often pushed out of “American” and then treated as not fully “Latino” either, just because we speak Portuguese instead of Spanish.

Meanwhile, Brazil is the biggest country in Latin America, we learn the continent’s colonization history in school, and we casually have most of the Amazon. So maybe people should respect Brazil as more than carnival, football, beaches, and happy hot people.

People from the United States can say they are used to calling themselves “Americans,” and I understand that in English this is the common word. But being used to something does not give anyone the right to dismiss the discomfort of everyone else. If the issue were truly pointless, people from other countries in the Americas would not keep bringing it up.

Just because something does not affect you does not mean it is meaningless. It just means you are not the one being excluded.

And honestly, this whole reaction is also a very “American” thing to do (and yes, I mean that in the way people outside the United States often use it.) whether people like it or not, there is a certain U.S.-American habit of treating the U.S. perspective as the default setting of reality.

Maybe it comes from the intense patriotism, maybe from the whole “American Dream” mythology, maybe from slogans like “Make America Great Again” (and see the issue? I am not voting in your country, so how exactly are you making my America great? xD)

So yeah… typical American. Not necessarily evil, not necessarily intentional, but definitely very familiar: “this is how we say it, sad but we're not gonna change it, everyone else should just accept it.” And honestly, if it were me, I would hate being seen that way by so many places outside my country.

But in the end, we all build our own legacy.

I've never heard anyone say cran.

I'm in California and never heard "crayon" pronounced as "cran." We've always said "cray-on."

not only spanish, portuguese and i think italian as well.
I head the name of Mexico is "united states of Mexico" or "estados unidos mexicanos". but the name "mexico" came from the "mexicas" that was how the aztecs call themselfs, i believe.

Here in Brazil i learned that all this land is america and is subdivided in 3 parts: South, Central and North. But the map men also has a very good video that explains why is dificult to define exacly whats is a continent. Like what we use to divide them. I recomend that one.

Also, fun fact... "Waldseemuller" literally translates to "Forest lake miller"

I guess the map maker's family used to be millers for a town on a lake in Germany at some point.

The issue is that English lacks a word for this. As a Mexican, I can’t use ‘America’ to refer only to one country when the entire continent has that name. And the reason is simple: I’m American too.

"Martin Waldseemüller's 1507 world map was the first map to depict a separate Western hemisphere with the Pacific as a separate ocean. The map grew out of an ambitious project in Saint-Dié, Lorraine (in present-day France), during the early 1500s, to document and update new geographic knowledge derived from the Portuguese and Spanish explorations of the late 15th and early 16th centuries. Waldseemüller's map was the most exciting product of that research effort. It drew upon data gathered during Amerigo Vespucci's 1501-02 voyages to the New World. In recognition of Vespucci's understanding that a new continent had been discovered, Waldseemüller christened the new lands "America." This is the only known surviving copy of the first edition of the map, of which it is believed 1,000 copies were printed. By showing the newly-found American land mass, the map represented a huge leap forward in knowledge - one that forever changed the European understanding of a world previously divided into just three parts: Europe, Asia, and Africa." World Digital Library.

America has been the name of the entire Continent since 1507. Although Waldseemüller had intended the name to apply only to a specific part of Brazil, other maps applied it to the entire continent. In 1538, Gerardus Mercator used America to name both the north and south regions on his influential map, and by this point, the name was securely fixed on the New World as One America Continent the concept of two Continents as North America and South America is pretty new after world war II united states asked to divide the two regions of the Continent of America as two continents in 1950. For a long time, both North and South America were often collectively referred to as "America" or the "continent of America". Shift in the 1950s:
The division into two separate continents became more common, especially in English-speaking countries, from the 1950s onward.

Only United States and Canada changed the view of the continent as two but the rest of the countries in the American continent has keeo the view of just One entire continent divided in 4 regions that are parts of the american continent. North America, Central America, South America and the Caribbean Islands. So the name belongs to the western hemisphere that they used to call the new world which later they called it America the two big land masses as One continent since they called it America as One.
