I think people need to stop thinking about their own identity. They are putting so much thought into rather than actually living it. If you're being yourself, you will find yourself.

‘IT girl’ and then it’s the most basic white girl ever

I think it’s so ridiculous how celebrities are glazed for the most basic outfits that your average person wears everyday but when it’s not a famous person wearing it it’s not celebrated or seen as cool

Never in my life will I understand girls who want to look like every single influencer they see. Same boring clothes, same micro trends, same hairstyle, same routine, same everything. It's not wrong by any means, I'm just surprised by the sheer amount of girls that do it.

People are thinking about themselves too much.

Break free from the idea of being a archetype. Be yourself and let people decide who they think you are without trying too hard. Just be yourself and speak up for yourself.

As someone that used to work in the NYC fashion industry many, many moons ago, your twenties and even into your mid-thirties is all about exploring your identity. I myself didn't get completely comfortable with what my true style was until late  thirties into my forties. Then you become part of the "We Don't Care" club. This is pretty much the "Cool Girl" club by default just with more gray hairs.

Why do people care so much about having ONE cohesive style? Like I have a couple different styles in my closet, I have vintage girly frilly cottage core dresses I love, I also have skin tight leather shorts and edgy jeans and tight dark tops, I also have rainbow pants and also khakis and literally I just wear what I want that day. I don't feel super girly today? Cool, I'll go with my Elementary School Teacher Clown pants! Some days I want to be extra feminine and twirl in a dress with lacy socks. Some days I feel more grungey, some days I look like an art student. But I use the same pieces in different ways and they're still fun. Why are people so obsessed with ONE aesthetic?

To the girl in the beginning who said "the cool girl is not going to be a marketing tactic anymore". Thought this was really interesting because lately I've been coming around to the idea that perhaps the concept of "cool" has always been a marketing tactic.

Took an advertising course during my uni days and one of the concepts that really stuck with me was associative advertising. In the late 20th century, studies had come out with evidence suggesting that material things don’t actually make people happy in the long-term. Rather, it’s the intangible things like having good relationships with loved ones, a sense of autonomy etc. that contribute more to happiness.

Companies know that they can't actually sell you these things. So the next best thing is to tell you that by buying their product, you will get those intangible things as a byproduct. Enter associative advertising. You want beauty and confidence? Buy lipstick. You want your wife to love you more? Buy her diamonds. The possibilities are endless.

I remember the prof showed us a really sappy commercial about a father and daughter’s bond. The product being sold? Chewing gum.

Ill be honest, the Hailey Bieber sushi and face mask trend had me rolling my eyes to the back of the skull, thats how nonsensical it seemed to me...But the way you describe the possible reason behind this phenomenon makes so much sense that it made me reflect and rethink so thank you for that!

The „cool girls“ died in the early 2010s. They weren’t influenced by social media yet

The idea of a cohesive person is actually so boring. I love when people have different sides and different and unexpected hobbies.

I feel like we are a stuck in a Black Mirror episode 😭

I agree that Caroline Kennedy did seem extremely chic. I think the obsession people had with her was that she was almost like royalty in that she had married a Kennedy, she was pretty and thin, and she died before she could live into the age where people get wrinkles. Her life was cut really short and people will always have a fascination with "what would her life have been like if she had lived?" Plus the fact that people who die young are forever young in our eyes. I agree she would probably hate all of this attention and scrutiny now. I think it's weird that people are trying to copy a style to such a degree. Wearing the same headband, shopping at the same store, wearing nearly identical clothes etc. I don't really understand the allure of literally copying someone else's persona. I wonder if it stems from insecurity over being ourselves and how it's safer to copy trends rather than dressing in our own style. I was more interested in doing this when I was in college but at this point in my life I really don't care LOL.

Hey I’m old! Your identity will come with time! Your teens and 20s are especially the ages where people are figuring everything out so it’s absolutely normal to try identities on and see what sticks. In time your person style will be curated and even then it will change but you’ll be more confident about what you like and don’t like. So have fun and explore as much as possible. Life has a way of letting you know what works for you.

everybody wanna be somebody but themselve . having an “aesthetic” is a medicinal coping term for a lot of people that are too frightened by the thought of claiming their intricacies and making them part of their identity (looks/persona)

5:54 Zoe’s parents are Lisa Bonet and Lenny Kravitz. She was born into coolness royalty For as cool as she is, her parents are so much cooler, they did what they wanted to do. As an older millennial the answer is y’all have no sense of self, being different was the cool factor. It’s like high school on steroids, it’s weird and overly complicated for no reason.

I worked in fashion when CBK was alive and she wasn’t such a big deal back then. She dressed like all the fashion PR girls and like a lot of us. She just happened to marry JFK jr who was a “prince” the paparazzi loved. We had so many IT girls back then, but no social media. The local paparazzi would shoot candids for magazines and she was great fodder because of her relationship, not her fashion. She was an ‘involuntary influencer’ like a bunch of other privileged girls back then. The 90s super models, Victoria Beckham and Devon Aoki were way bigger deals, but unlike today we didn’t all want to dress just LIKE ONE PERSON. CBK was well dressed, but more for the over-30s.

I remember her image really differently when it was happening - when everyone found out she was dating JFK Jr, all the misogyny went wild. Very jealous women and the paparazzi in general were saying she wasn’t “pretty enough” or accomplished enough, that she was too plain and nothing to look at so how did she bag JFK Jr? It was really disgusting. I can see how her aesthetic would really appeal today. But honestly, the Kennedys are gross in how they treated women, and I never found their relationship a “love” story, so I was never that invested. It’s weird seeing her pop up again in the public discourse.

I will never envy Caroline she got herself in a plane that fell more than 4500 feet in one minute WHAT ARE WE TALKING ABOUT
