The recipes are nor embellished, whe he changes something because the ingrediant is either missing or doesn't exist anymore he directly says so in the video.

The romans had plumbing and central heating. They were capable of a whole lot.

32:29 he's made a few Roman recipes by the time he made this one, so he really means that it "tastes Ancient Roman" because it has a similar flavour profile to other Roman recipes he's made

At their peak Rome had a population of over 1 million. In an age without electricity they were able to provide enough food, water, and sanitation to allow that many people to live in an urban setting.

Long pepper is extremely good and it was actually more popular than black pepper up until the 1400s when the switch from land based trade to a sea route around Africa made black pepper the more accessible option.  Long pepper has a slightly sweet floral scent on top of the normal pepper smell but is still about as spicy.

Actually it makes perfect sense for ancient meals to be quite fancy. What better way to flaunt your high status than to show off how many different kinds of food you had access to? People who ate the same food all the time grew their own food.

The level of ignorance is mind boggling.

Centurion - roman commander. Centaur - creature from Greek mythology half man half horse (roughly speaking 😂)

12:52 They went crazy on the rationing after world war two to the point that they stockholmed themselves into not wanting it.

The ninth legion was assigned to Britain and we have many records about them, but then all references stop, we don’t know why.

4:59 "100-200 eggs"
In the year 2025 this dish would cost like $700,000 to make

Don't know if anyone brought it up for Relia, but yes... Barley is considered good and healthy today, and that was also the same case in Ancient Rome. Barley was just also considered a lower quality grain compaired to something like Wheat.

I don't mean to be rude, but I'm guessing you slept through history class.

If you are interested in pizza specifically Max has a video on the history of pizza, titled "500 Year-Old Pizza VS Today".

I mean... to be fair, he's probably the only one who actually knows what ancient Rome tastes like at this point. He's remade so many of their recipes lol.

Ancient european recipes are suprisingly exotic. There is also stuff that can be foraged even up in the north that fell out of use for some reason. I saw one channel where they tried a medieval peasant dish and it was wholegrain bread with salmon. And for dressing he used sorrel mixed with salt that he pressed over it with water. They didn't have Lemon back then and sorrel has a sour taste. You can find it growing here up north on meadows but it's not something anyone would even think about nowadays. And other various herbs were available. We still use juniper but alot of stuff has just been forgotten. There's a herb used by the sami here called Angelica. You can make candy out of it. It's supposed to be abit sweet.

Would love more tasting history reactions!

Ex military bro in chat here, no not really I could bust out my MRE whenever I wanted to as long as I was not actively doing anything.

People like good food and always have. Max does a video on a Babylonian stew, two thousand years before Rome. He also does some videos on Greek food from five hundred years ago years before.

Back in the day spices were rare and expensive, but they also used a lot more herbs, many of which are largely forgotten about today even if they actually taste pretty good because they spend a couple centuries being considered "low class".
