This show was well ahead of its time. First and foremost it addressed real issues older women faced in the 80s. After 50 they were cast off. No one wanted them on tv or film. Leading men could bed a younger woman on tv or movies but women over the age of 50 were considered asexual and ignored.
The idea a woman dating and living their best life changed the narrative.

They pushed the envelope in comedy and in social issues. No one on Primetime tv was adressing things like homelessness, poverty, immigration and deportation, HIV and AIDS, gay marriage, lesbian relationships. They tackled fears of growing old and not being able to support ourselves.
It was all done without being condescending. It provoked thought and conversation—and it made us laugh our collective asses off.

The comedy stands the test of time—and so do the stories that were told.

Despite the fact the show aired in the mid-80s to early 90s, the show and the jokes have aged very well, no pun intended.  Fantastic show.

American here.  Do yourself a favor!  Do whatever it takes to watch "The Golden Girls" from the very first episode, onward.  You will laugh out loud.  This show is from the mid-80's and it still makes me laugh out loud.  You won't regret it.

This show was EPIC. You really need to see full episodes. These women were BRUTAL with quick cut downs on each other. It was awesome.

Bea Arthur, Betty White, Estelle Getty, and Rue McClanahan were national treasures

In America, this show is nostalgic. I watched  this show with my grandmother growing up, and I still watch it. It reminds me of good days . It is one of the best shows to ever air in America in my opinion.

The Golden Girls is one of the best sitcoms ever made - and it still holds up all these years later. I was 9 when it began and I still watch it now.

7:09 Perpetually vain Blanche who is in her 50's and complete denial about her age, is complaining that the guy she's dating will want to start a new family.  Something a much younger woman would worry about.  So Dorothy says wait a couple of years and Medicare will pay for it.  That's a medical plan in the US that automatically kicks in when you turn 65.  Sophia says "Why wait, have it now and the Enquirer will pay for it."  The Enquirer is our most famous tabloid newspaper that is famous for sketchy articles on the front page like "85year old Woman gives birth to Triplets!!"  Inferring that Blanche having a baby at her age is the kind of article The Enquirer would pay for.

The Golden Girls and Keeping Up Appearances are my two all time favorite sitcoms. Both had iconic actors and brilliant, timeless comedy.

Sophia, Dorothy's mother, the short little, really old Italian one, was played by Estelle Getty, and she was actually a year younger than Dorothy. She looked young than them in real life, but they made her old in the makeup chair for the show. Rose, who you thought was in an Adam Sandler, was the beloved Betty White. She lived longer than any of them, and all of the U.S. was excited to celebrate her 100th birthday, which was already planned for a big tv special. Unfortunately she died just 17 days before her 100th birthday. 😢😢

I watched this as a kid when it aired and I rewatch it still to this day. “Golden Girls” and “Designing Women” is the most solid hour of comedy you’ll ever watch.

About Blanche having a baby: Dorothy told her to wait a few years and Medicare will pay for it. Medicare is medical insurance for old people. Sophia said “why wait? Have it now and The Enquirer will pay for it!” The Enquirer was a tabloid that printed bizarre stories like “Alien baby born at NASA!” Or “Bigfoot spotted at local grocery store!”

Fun fact: The show was a favorite of the Queen Mother. They performed a live scene for her during a Royal Variety Performance in 1988.

One of my favorite bits of trivia about this show is that the ladies were all so well prepared that they often got the shot on the first take - it’s why the live studio audience laughs so hard at the punchlines, they were hearing them for the first time

I watched this when I was younger. It is an amazing show!  Racism, gay, abuse, discrimination…. All examples of topics they dealt with.  It’s a fantastic show!!!!

Rose is played by the late great Betty White

Gen X here. Definitely grew up on the Golden Girls. It was awesome. They were perfectly cast. 😊

Born in '77, so I grew up with this show when I was a kid. One of my favs until today. The whole family liked it actually. Rare for most comedies. It had something for everybody.

Hi I’m 70 years old here in Australia and this show has been SACRED to almost everyone I’ve known over the years last 40 years.
