“dating couples are not permitted to walk around campus after dark without a third person present” damn look at them accepting polyamorous relationships 😩

You and James yelling at each other over the lady not being in prison is the energy my gf and I have when I tell her about celebrity drama

Replace all Tennessee Confederate statues with Dolly Parton!

I was a PCC student in 2008, so some rules may have changed.
No collarbones showing.
No wet hair.
No touching the opposite sex (unless related)
Skirts below the knee ( also no denim skirts)
Pantyhose required for chapel ( had just changed from during all classes)
Three girls had to sign out together to leave campus.
And an RA was required to go to the beach with a group of 5 girls minimum.
I had 4 roommates and 4 suitemates ( two sinks, one shower and one toilet)
The water park was just opening when I was expelled.
I got really good at ice skating, though.
I have several family members that have also attended and the cousin I was at school with is now the men's basketball coach. I pride myself in being the only member of my family to have never gotten a single demerit!
I was drugged and raped by a classmate while travelling back to school after Christmas break. It took me two weeks to be able to put the pieces together of what happened. I was sitting in class one day and the RA called my name to go to the office. The bastard realized I was starting to figure out what happened and reported me for slander.  After two days of grueling interrogation from the administration ( not allowed to speak to anyone, shadowed to the bathroom phone confiscated during bathroom trips, eating alone with a self important RA staring at me). I was given the option to plead my case to the board, which I took only to find that they would seat me facing my attacker and allow him to appeal and retort everything. When I was expelled ( he was suspended) I was told I had 24 hours to get off campus and was not to talk to anyone. So as I silently sobbed and packed my room that night my roommates were asking me what was wrong and I could not say anything ( ever present RA to ensure silence). The first phone call I received was my Stepmother to say I was a MF hussy and not welcome in her home or around her children ( whom I had practically raised). Turns out the school had called my parents to tell them I lied about the whole thing, because I was not hysterical enough for it to have been real. Oh and I was 20 years old at this point.
I met my husband that summer and have done a lot of intense healing since. But PCC nearly broke me and I will likely never visit the state of Florida again.

As someone whose parents insisted that I applied to ORU- ohh boooy-

I went to their terrible "admitted students' day" and it was one of the most suffocating experiences of my life. They gathered all of us in a room and made us write essays about biblical topics (which we didn't know about prior). After an hour and half of sweaty writing we were then paired off with a councilor of the same gender to assess our "character" to see if we were deserving of financial support. I had a 4.0 from a local junior college (that was accredited/recognized by all the uni's in my state), a long list of volunteerism, and an had internship at local museum. All of this was ignored and instead my councilor decided that she would talk with me about my "godly character" and about how one shouldn't be consumed with pride about ones achievements. After this we proceeded (still divided by gender) to go talk with current students over lunch. The current girl students spent the entire time talking about whom they liked and who was courting who and had no actual knowledge about any of the programs there. Following this, we were taken back to a dorm where it was emphasized how all the girls had "curfews" and that they weren't like "public" universities that allow coed dorms, guys visiting the girls dorms, and other such nonsense.

There was a lot of other useless slut-shaming and modesty propaganda but that is to be expected. The frosting on the cake was after they had reviewed my "character" they decided to not offer me any financial support because I had not exhibited enough volunteerism at my church (which is ridiculous- I even sang in the choir), and because I had attended a non-christian university prior to applying (i guess that's a sin). On top of this, they refused to accept almost any of my credits, effectively trying to make me start my education over again "because we don't know how it was taught to you." And the schedule list they sent me contained three bible courses, one basic math course, and an elective. I obv. rescinded their offer and went practically full ride to different public university. When they received my declination they sent a HANDWRITTEN CARD to my house that told me in the most condescending cursive ever that they were "sorry that I didn't understand the mission of the university and that they were only trying to show me the right path but that they understood the right path isn't for everyone."

TL/DR: ORU is comprised of self-righteous morally-elitist educationally backwards idiots

republicans saying america was built on racism while claiming not to be racist is my favorite thing

I went to Oral Roberts University and boy howdy do I have some stories. Buckle up.

1) One of my favorite professors got fired for drinking alcohol in a restaurant in another state on vacation (I heard that someone saw him and snitched?)
2) My hip-hop dance teacher sat us all down and spent an entire class period lecturing us on how if we loved God we would be rich already, and healthy too. Then he came into class a couple weeks later with a cane — he’d gotten injured. He spent the rest of the semester periodically throwing the cane down and trying to worship the injury away.
3) Every semester there’s a mandatory “revival,” which means classes are cancelled so everyone can go to a bunch of church services. It’s not unusual for there to be signs in the door at Fall Revival/ whatever they call the spring one (I forget) that warn people not to come in if they experience light-induced seizures… because that’s how wild the “worship” is.
4) Massive pressure (in my personal opinion) to go on school-led and sponsored mission trips. I’d estimate that about half of all students participate in these. There’s a huge push (in my personal opinion) to go on these trips. In my experience, no matter what your reason for not going, it’s not good enough for a lot of the people who question you on it. Students who are already in debt are spending months fundraising so they can go on these trips, often during spring break or other times that you’d typically need to rest.
5) Accessibility is abysmal. Students I know who use wheelchairs have to go to other buildings to use the restroom, in the rain, with massive puddles on the sidewalk that are deep enough to splash the inner workings of electric wheelchairs and potentially damage them. Sidewalks were cracked and crumbling to the point of being dangerous to disabled students. Automatic doors were very often broken. The only way for a wheelchair to enter the cafeteria was through the tiny rickety elevator they use to bring up supplies and food shipments, and opens into the kitchens. This is barely scratching the surface — I have SO MANY STORIES on inaccessibility in this school.
6) During church services, revival and otherwise (There are mandatory church services twice a week. They take attendance.) there would sometimes be a whole cluster of disabled students in the lobby — one woman with asthma using her inhaler because all the smoke from the fog machines, the blind woman trying to avoid damaging her hearing because it was so loud, one woman with joint issues in serious pain because the bass was shaking her bones, me (I’m autistic) having a meltdown and literally crying on the floor from the overwhelming noise and lights, and often others, but I don’t remember all of them off the top of my head. We eventually got official permission to be allowed to sit in the lobby, so we wouldn’t risk getting in trouble for not being in the auditorium.
7) Every single PE class requires students to weigh themselves during class and turn in their BMI to the teacher. (As far as I remember it at least.)
8) Students are required to take a PE class something like 6 times (maybe 8, I forget). The school has a philosophy of “Whole Person Education” which the school claims is to make well-rounded students, but in my personal opinion is better described as a constant institutional pressure to be good at every. single. thing.
9) Every Monday night at 11 pm there’s a mandatory meeting for every floor. Doesn’t matter if you need to be up early — and these meetings often go until midnight or later.
10) Homophobia. I don’t have a lot of distinct stories about it, but it’s definitely prevalent, and every student has to sign a document during a church service at the beginning of each year promising not to do gay stuff (and so many other things).

There is so much more but if I keep going then no one is going to bother reading this comments. Jen, please reach out to me if you’d like more. I promise you there’s plenty info for a video (secret tunnels, unfinished theater that they never added the roof to because Oral Roberts thought it looked cool unfinished, healing services, and way more). I’m a professional content creator (Instagram and TikTok primarily) and I would gladly collaborate with you in any way you would find useful. I just want other people to not have to go through what my friends and I went through.

*Some parts of this school are cool. Some people at the school are amazing. I’m not against everyone there, I’m against policies and practices that lead to people getting hurt.

The Lindsay Roderts thing is fucking ridiculous. We need to take the sexual abuse of teenage boys by female perpetrators more seriously.

"we don't treat Black students differently" he says after just having admitted that Black students weren't allowed to attend until 1970

My best friend homeschools her daughter and has a fucking hell of a time finding programs that don't involve religion. She also found out that if you tell the school district you are homeschooling because of religious reasons, school districts actually ask for less information on what you're teaching. It's sketch as hell. Her daughter is super smart though and is thriving in home schooling. It would just be nice if there were more secular home school programs. So much of it is tainted with right wing Christian values.

So, my last name is Horton, and I have fundie cousins who go to PCC—how did I not know my own family founded it?! What?!

UPDATE: Arlin is my grandfather's cousin. Part of the reason we don't see that side of the family ever is because of how fundamentalist they are. I'm floored.

I feel that people with religious trauma & neurodivergent people can commiserate over the fact that we were both educationally neglected in our childhoods. We gotta start a club or something.

I work in the admissions department of a university, talking to and assisting prospective students. One day, when I was still fairly new to the job, I spoke with a student who was looking to transfer out of Liberty University. When I asked why he wanted to transfer, he sighed and told me, "I'm tired of answering questions with answers I know are wrong." This pops into my head whenever I speak with anyone from that school, it still troubles me so much.

I went to college in Virginia and Liberty College always hosted a really crazy haunted house that was surprisingly good, but at the end they would sit you down in a room and give you a speech along the lines of “Was that scary?? Well that’s what Hell is going to be like so you should turn to Christ. The scariest part of the whole thing 😂

As someone who used the ABeka curriculum until 10th grade, it doesn’t surprise me that they have such a problem with sexual violence on the PCC campus.  I remember reading the “rules for Godly dating” in my bible curriculum, and one of the ones for girls was to not wear suggestive clothing, as it might lead to date-rape.  That was the moment I realized that i needed to get out of that environment and start deconstructing.

I like how liberty university has a 50% acceptance rate and then a 29% graduating rate. Really show the true effort a Christian education can do

Church is for growing your faith. College is for growing your mind. Everything doesn't have to be church all the time. It's so cultish.

I go to Liberty University. When I started I was a Sunday School Teacher, Youth Leader, and went to church at least 5 times a week. I was raised in a fundamentalist cult-- so conservative that Liberty was seen as "progressive" to them. All I knew was what I had been raised with and I was crazy passionate about it. Now, 4 years later, I am still very into spirituality but Agnostic and I have finally come out as bisexual/pansexual and finally starting to actually live instead of just being half-alive. Thank you, Liberty.

ABeka is named after Beka Horton and the only reason they put the letter "A" in front is so that it would come up first in alphabetized searches. I used to work in the ABeka sweatshop and we learned that first day of training lol

I went to a national wrestling tourney and BYU was there. They had the women and men championship competing at the same time. The BYU wrestlers' wives gasped at the women wrestlers, and wondered who would ever want to marry a lady who wrestled. Me and a couple other girl wrestlers were literally right there across the aisle within earshot and full view. They knew we could hear
