Lecture given on Monday, November 13, 2023, by Jean-Marc Jancovici at the University of Geneva (UNIGE).
This lecture was organized on the occasion of the Latsis University Prize ceremony, honoring the four 2023 laureates.
"Looking at the last two centuries, humanity has shifted from renewable to fossil fuels. Among other consequences, this has transformed Switzerland from one of the poorest countries in Europe, or nearly so, to one with the highest GDP per capita. How can we explain this link between the economic boom of a country lacking mineral resources and access to the ocean and fossil fuels? More generally, how can we explain the role of energy in the evolution of the world over the last two centuries? And, looking to the future, what obstacles stand in our way to perpetuating the achievements of the current system without perpetuating its drawbacks—what is commonly referred to as 'carbon neutrality'?"
