Christian Reacts To Ren's 'Seven Sins' - This is Heavy

Christian Reacts to Ren's Seven Sins - This one is heavy. Pain, sin, and why suffering has purpose.

I finally got to Ren - Seven Sins after you guys brought it up during my Eden / Dear God deep dives. As a Christian strong in theology, I wanted to give an honest Christian reaction to Ren's take on pain, cursing God in suffering, and the seven deadly sins.

We break down the Welsh eulogy intro, the "clawed at the laminate" verse, the rose from pavement cracks line and Tupac connection, the difference between physical vs emotional pain with chronic illness, and that line "fear of the unknown preserves a religion." Then Ren closes with pride, lust, gluttony, sloth, envy, wrath, greed - and I tie it to Romans 5:3: suffering produces perseverance, perseverance character, and character hope.

No, God snapping his fingers to remove Ren's pain wouldn't have given us Hi Ren, Sick Boy, or this song. In eternity, 30 years of pain that shapes a generational voice is the blink of an eye.

What did you take from Seven Sins? Does this one make your playlist? Let me know yours down below.

If you're new here, I'm Stephen Dahle, and this is Stephens Vault, where I bring my background in psychology, business and music production to explore independent voices in news, culture, and music. With a focus on critical thinking, common sense and truth we do honest commentary and reactions.

REN is still suffering….He gives us beautiful music and wisdom with his music. That will be his legacy.

8:37 as an atheist, and I think i can speak for the majority of us in this case, we don’t think “good” and “evil” are mumbo jumbo and without meaning. We generally believe in good and evil, it’s just derived by and from natural law rather than from divine grant. Things can be good, and things can be bad or evil, but they aren’t good or bad because God or dogma claim it so, and name it as such. Good things are good because they are self-evidently good, and evil things are evil because they are self-evidently evil, and we (as humans) have a naturally derived sense of judgement that can tell the difference. We are a social creature, and so it is unsurprising, and frankly expected, that we would thus develop empathy because it engenders caring for others, which then fosters community which makes us safer. Actions that foster community and safety thus correspond to “good” because they lead to further community and more safety. Actions that threaten that community are thus “evil”. Lies, deception, theft, assault, murder, these are all things that lessen or weaken community and erode trust if not cause abject bodily harm or even death. A healthy safe community can’t allow its members to deceive, threaten, or even kill fellow members lest it become unhealthy and unsafe, so things that harm community becomes labeled as “evil”.

The three 6s, while symbolic of a concept of evil, aren’t evil in and of themselves (in the atheist world view, they eschews supernatural explanations in favor of naturalistic beliefs and expectations), and thus neither invite nor cause any real harm just for existing.

He released this song about two years ago. Ren talks about the years of suffering he went through in depth. His despair, his anger and disillusionment that he experienced at the time that he was going through this illness definitely drove his pen. Ren also talks about his realization that his suffering led to his success, and his acceptance of all of the years that he went through his disease leading to everything good that he has today. I appreciate his vulnerability and honesty. Ren has been through a rebirth of sorts that ensures many years to come of amazing music.

Ren captures his humanity then mirrors that out for us all. Humanity is all we have. Thats what we should be believing in.

I'm a faithful person and this song is 100% my anthem as a chronic pain/autoimmune patient. I've never found any other that speaks to my experience and life as spot on as this one does, and I'm so thankful Ren held on to write it.

@francesdoll4039 7 days ago

This song starts with Ren in excruciating pain on the kitchen floor falling into 3-4 months of psychosis from an immune reaction to a new treatment attempt. He saved for 6 months and went through 10days of treatment and he was way worse. No wonder despair and bitterness arose.

I envy religious people for them having a shield against the brutal harshness of reality. I do not have a religion but I do have a belief. There just is no religion that matches up with my belief. However the bit about the seven sins are descriptive of some basic human traits, of our natural tendencies, and greed is indeed the worst one that will indeed affect us the most in the long run.

21:25 "I have stood in the flames that cremated my brains". Genius forged in the furnace of despair and agony.

Crime scene, for rens sick (forensic) is the best line for me!

@ProsperoFinch 7 days ago

6:12 respectfully, as a progressive, the idea of criminal justice reform isn’t about being kinder to criminals or not wanting to put them in these harsh conditions because we wouldn’t want to be there ourselves; the motivation seen through the lens of “love your neighbor” (wish and work towards the safety and wellbeing of your neighbor) is through an understanding of the circumstances that lead one to commit a crime. Crime emerges from an environment of desperation and often poverty, where legal options for survival and the ability to thrive are thin or unavailable. Simply punishing people for crimes committed when you don’t also address the context that birthed the crime isn’t tantamount to kicking someone when they’re down. It’s not about excusing the crime or forgiving it. It’s about recognizing why the crime is happening and making moves to fix the underlying issue leading people to choose crime. We care for our neighbor by making efforts to repair the community and fix/change the systems that break the community in the first place.

Fear of the unknown preserves a religion is 100% on point for believers and non believers. Because no one in this life could understand the afterlife. Believer or not that line makes sense.

16:50 FORENSIC = FOR REN'S SICK

@happyhobbit66 7 days ago

One of my favourites, I’m lucky enough not to suffer physically or mentally but this is so powerful it definitely gives some understanding of the pain he was in. As you said you’re reacting to Genesis sometime, perhaps do both the studio and live acoustic versions together, the same with Troubles 😊

@Ariel_Kay9 7 days ago

If you pay attention closely, the first 3/4 of the song is the 7 deadly sins on his own life: Pride
Cursing God, maker, messiah, all of creation; “sinner man” who still wants the mic; Lust “Wanna be me” / greener grass — people lust after his pain-persona; Gluttony Consuming pain, dining with the coroner, body as feast; Sloth
Thirteen years stuck; bed as tomb/womb; can’t stand, only kneel; Envy The lookers-on; also him watching empires/universe collapse from bed; Wrath Bitterness → storm of aggression; MAC-10 ricochet pain; prophets buried; Greed Pay me my cheese — monetize the wreck

Thanks for sharing your experiences and recognising the pain he went through at that time

Genesis is my fav Ren song. I find it less religious and more about his health struggles. My fav Ren lyric comes from this song.

Normally I skip the intros, but this intro with the translation of Hebrew and Greeks words for love was interesting.
Thanks guy!

As you say, atheists see no power in mythical symbols - it often surprises me how many people of faith don't understand that. We see more power in symbols that have been used to promote inhumanity like the swastika or the lightning bolt.
