The sheer amount of fan "ownership" of media is what disturbs me the most. That they act like the piece of media belongs to them because they like it, therefore they get to dictate everything and anything that doesn't match their preconceived notions must be destroyed. It's utter nonsense.

A movie should be a movie, not a Lore Delivery System.

I agree, but I can't help but feel it also has something to do with them wanting 50s-esque "father knows best" style valorization of male characters. God-like men standing around posing powerfully and being looked to as authority figures. Not complex characters, they actually want very simple authoritative men propaganda, who they can project a daddy onto. That's why I think the specific word "disrespectful" comes into play. It's an odd word choice that, I think, carries specific patriarchal implications about how men or fathers are supposed to be treated. To them, not having men-glorifying propaganda is disrespectful to how you're supposed to treat men.

This show did not look promising to me on the basis of advance promotion, or even the first episode--I gave it a chance and by about Episode 3 I was absolutely hooked. I did not think I was looking for a gritty, grounded crime drama about Green Lanterns set in basically my dad's hometown, but, man, it's good.

I think much of media criticism now is "Are my expectations being met?" I see this especially in the realm of video games, where some of those that are most ardently criticized and lambasted are just those that didn't meet expectations. That doesn't even mean they are bad. It's something I've spent too much time thinking about. With that in mind, I think this video puts it pretty well. It's about validation, getting what you've already had. Or even getting what you constructed in your mind, even if there was no basis for that belief to be created.

This is why I actively step away from fandoms these days. Most of the crybabies don't seem to understand anything about storytelling, filmmaking, or even art in general. They just form an opinion, slap some bs reasoning on it, and complain ad nauseum. It's just not worth listening to them anymore.

8:29 yes these fans want superheroes to be portrayed like Zack Snyder did with Superman, like a God and detached from the realm of human emotions. Coincidentally these whiners are mostly Zack Snyder fanboys as well. Plot be damned, they want "hype and aura moments".

I'm willing to bet it's also because Hal Jordan is 'one of the main characters' and not the only main character.

Hollywood never wants to do anything new, because new is risky.  So they keep pandering to nostalgia.  But people looking for nostalgia don't want new, they want comfort.  They want stability, they want stasis, they want to be pat on the head and told it's gonna be okay, the world isn't REALLY passing them by.

But new experiences are what we need to stay active, stay fresh, stay alive.

Not reader of comics in general so I went into this show cold. LOVE THIS SHOW!!!

I kinda hope they turn Hal Jordan into The Spectre. I really like the 2001 series that featured Hal acting as "the spirit of redemption", I believe written by DeMatteis. That series has never been reprinted and is not available digitally, so I guess other people don't like it as much as I do.

As a comic book fan my whole life, I liked Hal Jordan. However, he was, mostly, dead fer the time I read comics. Much, like, Barry Allen.

That being said, this show has been AMAZING and/or INTRIGUING.

This is a really good show. If I’m realistic, most of my experience of Green Lantern with childhood wish fulfillment and digging the Gil Kane suit. I don’t need that nostalgia to be recreated at age 65. I can handle an actual human drama hung on the bare bones of the lantern mythos.
