This commentary is really funny I needed it thank you.

@7:24 the song you're trying to remember that was in the advertisement was Tears For Fears "Everybody Wants to Rule the World". Great  commentary video!

I was very young when this came out and it was the first time I was really caught up in they hype of a movie. It felt like such a huge event. It was everywhere. Seeing it in the cinema was amazing. It's still one of my fondest movie-going memories. We got in on VHS too and even seeing it again at home felt like a real treat. And yes, I ahd the VHS with the hologram cover! Saying that, as you guys said, I saw it countless times as a child and I  haven't returned to it in decades!

Despite being a drunk, they gave Randy Quaid's character an F-18 because he was an F-4 Phantom pilot in Vietnam, and the F-18 is easier to fly due to it being fly-by-wire and having far less analogue controls than the F-4.

Nickstright - the 90s were a fucking golden age for there being a good reason to go to the cinema practically every week!

Another brilliant commentary guys, the three amigos, oliver said he has been re watching Harrison ford thrillers, have you seen witness... a classic film. Thanks guys can't wait for the next commentary

Margaret Colin (the President's Communication Director) was in the US Soap Opera, As The World Turns (with Meg Ryan) in the early/mid 1980s.  The show was very good at doing teen friendly storyline during the summer with the younger cast members, in my household and neighborhood, Margaret Colin was famous and a very familiar face.

Let me tell you something, I saw this movie on the 4th of July of 1996 and It kicked so much ass! That destruction set pieces are first rate and deserved the Oscar it won. As for Bill Pullman's speech, If I get shivers down my back that means it's awesome! I still get shivers down my back during that scene to this day! To anyone who says that this is corny or cheesy: You wouldn't know a exciting and engaging big budget blockbuster disaster movie if swam up and bit you in the balls! And one more thing, clichés exist because they are TRUE!!! Okay.  I got that out of my system. Excellent work.

I know it has its critics but this was a pretty solid movie in '96. I've always loved watching movies with commentaries, and your ones make the movies feel new again.

"Runnin on the spot!" So embarassing 🤣

2:02:00 Thank you, Oliver!  (In Harrison Ford's "Scottish" accent) How dare he?
I also love how you mention the film Big Wednesday (1978) during the end credits, because you usually never hear about that film.  I only heard about it when FSM released the limited edition soundtrack CD to the film.  I thought it was worth a viewing or two, but I never did own it.  I owned the score for years, but then found it a bit pretentious and very over-the-top.  I appreciate the route Poledouris was doing, but I think he had to tone it down a bit.  The film was hammy enough with Milius' script.

Happy Independence Day Ollie

This and Twister made for a lovely childhood memory of seeing a drive-in double-feature spectacular

Great commentary. I'd love for you two or three to do a commentary on the dire 2014 Robocop remake. Your Alien Romulus commentary was a great great listen, and I've love to hear your guys thoughts on the Robo remake in a similar vein to Romulus, especially Rob! Cheers!

That was a great commentary thanks guys. Nick Helm was on fire on this one lol. Very entertaining and fun commentary from the trio.
And yes, I love ID4

To answer Rob and Nick question the casting wasn't by design the cast was like Roland's 3rd or 4th choices. Ethan Hawke was Roland Emmerich's first choice for Will Smith's character, the part was his to turn down. The casting director suggested Will Smith and said he's the next big thing. Roland is a big fan of Wargames (1983) (who isn't) and wanted Matthew Broderick for the Jeff Goldblum role. Matthew was busy with Broadway and Directing Infinity (1996) and became available for Godzilla (1998) (thats how that came about) it's in a lot of Godzilla articles in magazines like I think in Empire, Total Film, or the short lived Neon magazine at the time. Jeff had a picture deal with 20th Century Fox with Nine Months (1995) Powder (1995) and The Great White Hype (1996) and the studio suggests him. And if I remember correctly Charlize Theron was up for Jasmine when Ethan Hawke was up for the part probably because of 20th Century Fox's That Thing You Do (1995) so a very different cast in mind.

Everyone absolutely on fire here! Nick had some really great insights and I laughed pretty much the whole way through. Brilliant stuff, guys!
One of the F-18 miniatures (likely screen used) used to be at the Planet Hollywood at Euro Disney.

Independence day is the biggest que for a movie I've ever had to stand in at the cinema. Before the days of online pre-booking. The que was that long I had to see a later showing cos by the time we got to the ticket office they'd sold out.  I've never had that for any other movie.

Also, Yes Andi Peter's voiced a baggage handler at the airport in Toy Story 2.  I still remember watching a channel 4 featurette on it where he was behind the scenes for the making of Toy Story 2 and they let him go into the sound booth to record his lines.  It was aired on a Sunday in the 90s, either before or after a Hollyoaks omnibus. 😂

The Independence Day videogame has extra scenes that are not in the film

Robert Loggia, unsung hero. I remember him from so much. Scarface, Don´t eat the snow in Hawaii(pilot for Magnum PI), BIG, Psycho 2, Innocent blood, Lost Highway, The ninth configuration, Jagged Edge, Several Pink Panther movies, and he was in some cool Italian movies aswell. He was just great.
