Welcome or welcome back to the Stash!
Before Nick Fury became Marvel’s greatest superspy, he was the cigar-chomping leader of the Howling Commandos!
In this video, I return to the early Marvel Universe and explore Sgt. Fury and His Howling Commandos issues 1 to 20.
We’ll look at how Stan Lee, Jack Kirby and Dick Ayers brought Marvel’s war comic to life, the unforgettable squad surrounding Fury and the losses that helped shape the future director of S.H.I.E.L.D.
Are the original Nick Fury comics still worth reading? Let’s find out!

If the MCU had adapted the classic comics more than the Ultimate comics, we could have had Kurt Russel as Nick Fury himself!

Kirby, a soldier on D-Day, making war fun.

Classic Nick Fury was the best... although he's morally grey most of the time...he's stoic and strong. He's a solider through and through.

Thank you for covering this.

In my opinion, no one did Nick Fury better than the initial runs of Kirby and Steranko

I'm a lifelong Marvel Comics fan..& I remember reading the OG Sgt Fury & His Howling Commandos as a kid growing up in the 70s.. but I became a HUGE Nick Fury fan when I discovered Strange Tales featuring Nick Fury Agent Of SHIELD.. with the ICONIC Jim Steranko doing the artwork!
I also love the fact that Nick Fury had 2 of the BEST Marvel Comics artists of ALL TIME.. Jack Kirby & Jim Steranko... working on both of his titles in the 60s..

I'm seventy-two years old and I quit reading comics when I was in my mid-teens; however, I still remember where I was and how upset I was when I read about Pam's death. I also remember the lay out of those pages, and Nick Fury dropping the engagement ring. My mother was English; she had met my father during the war, so that made it especially shocking.

“Oh we looking at the original SHIELD comics today.”
Proceeds to watch video.
“Oh you meant the original original Fury comics, where he still had 2 eyes.”

I didn’t see that coming but I love your knowledge on the stuff that obscure to even some hardcore comic fans.

I wish the MCU would bring back the OG Nick Fury. I never cared for the Ultimate retcon, or his 616 "replacement" as his son. If it was up to me, I would have casted Kurt Russell or Dennis Quaid for the role.

I kind of miss original Nick Fury, modern Nick is just Samuel Jackson, and even then the persona has overstayed it's welcome. Though I don't know who would have played him.

Gary Friedrich deserves so much credit for his run. Stories like, "The Deserter" and "The Assassin", have stuck with me. Same for a lot of Stan Lee's. This comic is what I mainly use when I see people say that code-approved comics were all immature, censored slop with no deep storytelling. That's unfortunately something I've seen a lot.

I love how Nick Fury went from being a soldier during WW2..then became head of SHIELD..& became practically IMMORTAL due to the Infinity Formula..& ended up on the damn MOON as Earth's FIRST line of DEFENSE against Alien Invaders..

Nick Fury being Regularly shirtless gives John Rambo vibes!

My Nick Fury. From Strange Tales #135 to the end of Secret Warriors (2009). A no nonsense man of action who got the job done whether you liked him or not.

My only exposure to the og Nick Fury was the 90s Spider-Man cartoon series and Marvel Ultimate Alliance. I even got my hands on a paperback of Nick Fury: Agent of SHIELD by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby. I really miss that he used to be a James Bond esque character and fighting along side with other heroes.

Nick Fury Agent of SHIELD was the best Nick Fury run by far!

Captain Fury ,aka THE SKIPPER A pulp mag preceded anything Stan was doing. This FURY had an oddball crew( including a mate named DOOM!) and had unique gadgets that significantly preceded the Marvel versions. Came out in 1936. As with most early comics, the creators just straight up “ lifted “ these concepts from pulps . The PHANTOM by lee Falk was lifted from the Pulp, Phantom Detective. The examples are numerous
