“How do you like them apples” being a genuine line in this game is going to send me into psychosis

@Nixcillian 1 month ago

That ending just reeks of playground "Nuh uh! Cuz uh... without my NEONYMIC then the protonymic doesn't do anything" "Yeah, well I have that too!" "UH, well my soul is still tied to this realm! And I like, know karate and stuff, so you can't beat me!" "Yeah, well I have an ANGEL friend who's IMMUNE to karate and a sword of soul-severing!" And the snarky, as you said Fallout-4-like phrasing just makes this the most insufferable stand off between two total nerds!

Musicologist here! Sounds like you’re talking about how battlespire is ambient music. Essentially it’s non-teleological, having no narrative or direction. Whereas the other examples you give lean more into cinematic music and use more motivic segments to create associations with specific themes and people. (Check out stuff about leitmotif in opera if you want more in-depth description of that concept) Some composers wrote a LOT about the idea of narrative music and whether or not it’s a good idea.

But yeah you’re onto something cool (and real!) with your tangent about the soundtracks of these games, and it’s very fun to examine!

Dagon's "Mistakes have been made" line is so memeable.

Can't believe they snuck doomed yuri into Battlespire

@radicaljam6862 1 month ago

It was nice of Dagon to stand there and let you ragebait him long enough to spout all that nonsense at him.

The first "So...that just happened" type game. Forspoken's great ancestor.

I love how its no obscure challenge or specific limitation.
Just you beat it. That's the challenge, and a testament to what you endure to bring us insight and witty commentary on what is something most of us will likely never touch.

Update: Endured is a better fitting title indeed xD

Another fine addition to the "So You Don't Have To" series.

I kinda dig the voice acting for the ideal masters. They intonation is a little uncanny, like they are forgetting how mortals speak

@TheMapleDealer 1 month ago

man youre the second person who beat it for me so I dont have to. Now I feel compelled to do it myself...

I love the idea of saying "how about them apples?" to a mad diety of destruction

Warhammer 40K still uses "Wounds" as the HP stat to this day

One thing I will say for Battlespire: they absolutely cooked with the names. Something about “The Weir Gate” and “Shade Perilous” really does it for me.

Also, you missed the best part of the game, the Mock Turtle.

I think a good descriptor of the music in Battlespire would be "ambient" -- the songs in the other games are, well, songs. They're constructed pieces, that are made as songs -- you could plausibly find the score for Harvest Dawn somewhere on an oblivion NPC's desk as sheet music. But the music in Battlespire isn't like that; it's ambience. It's an entire atmosphere in a box, it's meant to sound like the place itself. Even if you got the sheet music for it, you wouldn't be able to adequately perform it without essentially just recreating that environment, sonically.
