The Climate Prediction Center's September outlook favors a wetter-than-normal winter across California, with odds of 50-60% near the coast. In March 2023, over 12,000 households in the Sierra foothills were still without power, with downed trees blocking roads. In an outage, a fridge keeps food safe for up to 4 hours and a full freezer about 48. There's no ALDI near my house, so I priced 12 shelf-stable foods at the closest one, in Fresno, on ALDI's own site: $68.94 for 46 items. One cheap staple every stockpile list tells you to buy didn't make it. How many days could your family eat from your shelf?

In this video, we talk about the meat your freezer can't save, canned chicken and the $0.95 tuna next to the $1.95 can, the no-stir peanut butter that passed Greg and the jar that dropped 40 cents this week, crackers by the sleeve, why the dry bean sack stays off an outage shelf on a well, warming soup and chili safely outdoors, the vegetable you'll actually eat, why canned fruit runs out of time first, shelf milk, two weeks of breakfast from one canister of oats, and the comfort food FEMA puts on its own list.
