I haven’t had a regular job in 13 years, and there’s a lot I’ve learned along the way.
Before becoming self-employed, I spent about a decade building a career that I genuinely loved. I worked my way up from sales associate to store manager, and at the time, I thought I was building my lifelong career. What I didn’t realize was that I was also learning marketing, sales, customer experience, leadership, operations, and all kinds of other skills that I would eventually use to build businesses of my own.
When I finally left that career, I thought I was starting over. I wasn’t.
And after 13 years of working for myself, my perspective on job security has completely changed too. I don’t think real job security comes from knowing that a company will keep paying you. For me, it comes from knowing that I have skills that create value for other people—and knowing I can figure out how to turn those skills into income.
