I grew up in a Japanese house. I've now lived in America longer than I lived in Japan.

Everyone tells you Japanese homes feel calm because of minimalism, or wabi-sabi, or some philosophy about owning less. That's not it. Japan never had anywhere to put the problem — and America built somewhere.

In this video I walk through ten things you won't find in an ordinary Japanese house, starting at the front door and ending with the one that took me thirty years in this country to understand.

I'm not saying one country got it right. I like my central heating. But there are things about the house I grew up in that I couldn't see until I'd lived on both sides of it.

If you make it to the end, leave one word in the comments: done. And tell me what the object was.
