I've been playing a lot of monster tamers lately and realised I don't actually want them to fight. Which leaves an obvious problem - if they're not fighting, what are you doing? These five games have completely different answers: a clinic, a flute, a snake ranch, a pond, and a bathhouse.

Realistically you're not starting five games tonight.
Which one's your kind of evening - treating them, listening to them, building for them, fixing the pond, or running the bath?

Fixing the pond, every time. I put a bit of furniture down for no reason other than I wanted to, and then spent ten minutes photographing a frog sitting on it. Though I have to say the exploration in Creatures of Ava is very appealing!

All the links, platforms and controller info are in the description.

You forgot Paleo Pines where you tame dinosaurs. With a flute. And they help you work your farm. No fighting.

Makes me think of Ooblets! It’s a little goofy game where you compete in dance battles with other teams of ooblets, and when you win they give you a seed to grow one of their kind. The names, designs, story, and characters are varying degrees of silly, but it’s genuinely pretty fun!

The first one feels like what the Pokémon daycare would be like lol it’s so cute!

Beastieball probably has my favorite answer to this problem— the creatures you collect play volleyball :D

I love the idea of the Spirited Away game.
Also you might be interested in another title called Slime Rancher, where you collect and breed adorable slimes.

Not really a creature collector, but I was thinking of Creature Kitchen while watching this. I won't spoil it, but it's an amazing game, short and sweet.

I used to be so obsessed with Viva Piñata trouble in paradise as kid. You're given a garden to restore and the more you do the more piñata creatures show up. You also had to care for the plants in a pretty basic plant care system but it was all so incredibly colorful and fun. Even when you whack one the piñata just reforms outside the garden

My favourite non-fighting creature collecting game is paleo pines. You befriend dinosaurs and they help you with your little farm. The art style is really cute and you befriend them much like creatures of ava with the flute, and then you give them treats.

I love wobble dogs, its a great creature collector as they are creatures

I really enjoyed Creatures of Ava, but unfortunately it is a really hidden gem. Glad you're mentioning it here. 😊Kamaeru looks really cute as a game to wind down with

After reading all the comments, some games that I haven't seen mentioned are roots of pacha- which is more of a farming game but animal farming involves taming wild prehistoric animals with a flute (which have multiple color variants for you to collect) and you can domesticate them through breeding with special items. Cave exploration in roots of pacha is about solving puzzles and does not have combat. Another super hidden gem is called flock (not to be confused with flock around) and is about finding and learning about different creatures so you can add them to your flock and fly around with them. Okay I swear last one (my steam wishlist is over 4000 games. I love my niche hidden gems!) is yonder the cloud catcher chronicles! It's an open world farming game, but there's cats to be found and lots of different animals to befriend! It's already been mentioned by others but Loddlenauts is one of my favorite games ever and I was one of the first to help figure out and document the loddle types when the game first came out! (There's now an in-game guide you can fill out with all of the types, but that wasn't in the game upon first release)

Monster Care Simulator you Can own your own monster. You have to hatch a egg, name it, and it is YOUR monster. You can level it up, sell it, etc.

I'm making my own cosy critter game, so these videos give me an idea of what's already been done and if I need to be more original with my idea 😂

I like the froggy game, the gameplay loop reminds me of Viva Pinata!

I need one where you run a sanctuary and care for different creatures so badly. I’m so excited for planet zoo 2 with the wild reserve aspect

Helping with the ranch/chores, helping other people by renting them out, a sancturary / breeder etc

Promise Mascot Agency has you recruit townsfolk to help mascots that you've collected. It's not like anything else I know

I love Monster Care Simulator, it's very cozy. Can get a little hectic but that's what the employees are for (though they can be annoying). I never quite figured out the hatching eggs part since you can only have so many. Spirit Tea is nice too, but the quests can be very obscure and remembering who likes to sit next to each other is a hassle. I stopped playing because of the stupid noodle quest, even after looking up a guide I couldn't get it to work. Spirit Tea requires a good memory which I don't have

While I've had my fair share of fighting creature collector games which I will always love, I will say that I do like a bit of cozy games as well when I feel the need to have something to relax to as well. Though some of these don't sound that appealing such as monster care simulator even though it is nice to work as a vet for these monsters and while I do like the sound of it because you're caring for the monsters rather than summoning them to a fighting ground between trainers, I feel like the repetitiveness of it would end up making me a bit bored in the end, I do like the sound of exploration adventure with Creatures of Ava where you have to copy the sound of a creature with a flute and it becomes your friend and you take it to a safe place because that's honestly really cute 🥰 I do also like the sound of the game where you build something for cute little frogs and they come and take over the place. that's super cute too.
