Can you do this with the paper lying flat on a table or is it best to have it perpendicular?

I'm forever compared to Cezanne - whenever I'm out in plein air, the general public will mention how my perspective reminds them a little of a painting of his. But I sort of take it as a criticism. Cezanne made a conscious decision to distort his perspective, whereas mine is poor execution. My values are good, the overall painting is good, but accurate drawing is the final step between a good painting and a great painting that looks like it was done by a professional. And I can feel it. If I can just get into the habit of drawing like this then I'll be where I want to be. Or near enough.

I found easier to draw a vertical line which is haft of the vase or egg etc. And measure from the line to the outer shape. 😊

I haven’t seen this technique before, but it makes sense to me.  I’ve been sometimes doing something similar, but now it’s more clear to me that one can develop this technique with practice.  Ellipses and vases are tough!  Thank you.
