Earth was alive for billions of years before humans appeared. For much of that time, a visitor could have found a living planet whose air we could not breathe. What took so long?

One explanation is that the evolutionary transitions leading to us were extraordinarily unlikely. Another is that the planet itself needed to change before those transitions became possible. Ancient rocks, low oxygen sponges and evolving yeast help reveal why the difference matters. But the two explanations may be harder to separate than they first appear.

From Galileo's search for life on Earth to the atmospheres of distant worlds, this documentary follows the evidence behind our late arrival, and asks what could tell us whether another living planet would ever produce someone able to ask the same question.
