There is a recording that runs for about a minute. It was made by a pressure sensor on a falling probe, on the fourteenth of January two thousand five, on the surface of Saturn's largest moon, and what it caught was wind. It is the only sound our species has ever recorded from the surface of a world in the outer solar system.
Titan is the one other place with rain, rivers, deltas, coastlines and seas, under a nitrogen sky thicker than our own. It is also the one other surface where a person could stand without a pressure suit, in a coat and a mask, in orange daylight.
We have been there once. The probe fell for two hours and twenty seven minutes, sat on the ground for another seventy two, and half of its pictures were never recorded, because a single command was missing.
The next visit lands in two thousand thirty four.
