the fact it was chattering on a light cut in brass means the ways are fucked and need reworked even the spindle bearing is gone on it just because you cleaned and repainted it means nothing if its not functioning as intended
I don’t think the critics watched the same video as me. Your dial indicator at the end showed pretty much perfect precision. People just want to hate what they cannot do themselves to make themselves feel better about being unaccomplished and lazy. Good on you for bringing an old machine back to life and probably learning some new skills and techniques.
As I watched the disassembly, I am reminded of when I was around 10; I was given an old pocket watch just to take apart. But I had no idea how to put it back together.
When you restore an old lathe, or any power tool, the first time you put it under power is MAGIC !! And then, you get to cut metal with it ! Very nice work, I am sure it will serve you very well for many years to come .
Great work! Just starting my BF Barnes Lathe restoration. Word of caution for restoration enthusiasts: Paint that old needs to be treated as if it contains lead, because it probably does. Lead additive is a great rust inhibitor back in the day.
Its all about the little things. It looks like so much work went into this, but no thought about removing the patina from the entire surfaces of the metal. Still, I enjoyed watching it.
