Can you really stay overnight in your campervan for just £2? And could cheap overnight car parks be the perfect stepping stone between campsites and ‘wild’ camping?

On this trip through Derbyshire, we stayed overnight in a council car park near Eyam for just £2 – a huge saving compared with the £30–£40 we can easily spend on a campsite.

There’s no electric hook-up, showers or campsite facilities, but there are public toilets nearby and, for us, it had everything we actually needed for a simple overnight stop.

More importantly, we think places like this are a brilliant way to build your confidence if you’ve always stayed on campsites but aren’t quite ready to start finding remote wild camping spots.

In this video we share our experience of staying overnight in a public car park, how we find cheap campervan stopovers using Park4Night, what we look for before deciding to stay and why seeing a few other campervans parked up actually made us feel more comfortable.

And with places like Eyam, Castleton, Hathersage and the Peak District countryside nearby, cheap overnight parking can also make a fantastic base for exploring without paying campsite prices every night.

We’re going to be searching for more cheap, unusual and affordable campervan stopovers around the UK, so subscribe if you’d like to see what we find.

⚠️ Always check the current signs and parking restrictions when you arrive. Overnight parking rules and charges can change, so don’t rely solely on information from apps or previous visits.
