I am carpenter since 16 and started plastering because paddy an old boy on site (70) needed a hand and I asked him too teach me but he said no ur the wrong colour ( I'm Mixed race), BANTER!!!! So the. For the. Next 12 months he only let me mix platsr and clean buckets oh and I mixed bonding with a stick 😢lol, he didn't explain anyfink but told me too watch and learn, he was the best plasterer I've ever seen came too work in white shirt and brown trousers and flat cap and wud go home without a drop of plaster on him !!!!!. He was brutal but fair and gave me a skill that has got me through life and always will !!! We got on like house on fire and he gave me his first trowel which was 45 years old ❤ RIP PAD ❤
I've got absolutely no plans to plaster anything but I find these kinds of videos really fascinating.
Great job cleaning up the back wall too. It probably would've gone completely unnoticed by the owner but that extra care goes a long way. Too many people will do a rough job and leave rough edges that they'd never dream of leaving in their own home.
Those extra steps show real care for the quality of your work and your customers.
What you should say: "If you're a beginner, get the one called double-time, you'll thank me for it later" Cracking video as always Kirk, gave me the confidence to crack on some small jobs at home, and powered through when the gear started to pick up.
You could probably get a perfect finish just using a brick and a wooden spoon, but it's very encouraging to DIYers like me to be taught how to do things the "non-professional" way. Many thanks for another great video!
Never thought I'd see the day Kirk using a sponge float!😂 It's helped me as a DIYer. I'd recommend Multi-Finish over Board-Finish because you can always bring Multi-Finish back using a sponge float. I'm speaking from experience. After watching so many of Kirks videos, I was overconfident and thought I could use Board-Finish but that was a painful mistake! 😂
IVE been a plasterer for 27 years I use a nela flexi from start to Finnish with ox spach! and sponge the main reason is my wrist is weak from wear and tear! I can get ceilings and walls perfect we all have our own ways 👍
a plasterer i know keeps a fine sanding sponge in his overall pocket and between coats when hes havin a cuppa he runs it over the edges of his favorite trowel, even long after the trowel is broken in .. always gets a tidy finish .. crack on Kirk lad .. awesome
Video Title: This ceiling is a pain in the arse, instead of doing the way I want to I will do it to show you what can be done by you and at no point will my reputation be at risk with a paying customer.
I attempted a small inconspicuous wall with new tools. A little girl growing up watching my grandad build all the neighbour hood garden walls, and make garden things with me out of concrete he was a brickie in the 40s. All my tools were new and I didn't know this was the reason for my uneven finish, it was polished in places but not others, and I felt a little disappointed but I tried. Thanks to you Kirk I know why! Now I feel confident to go back and have another go. Amazing guy, I love you vids.
Brilliant. I've learned so much. I worked construction decades ago, a big reno on my house 30 years ago, and just fixing since. So I don't need to know how to do this.... However, taping drywall and plaster work has always completely humbled me. I could do everything else on a house, including concrete, but getting smooth plaster/mud never. Love these videos. There is also a really important historical aspect to your videos. How did the ancient Egyptians and Romans do this? Just like you are, except wooden tools. There's also the thinking in this that shaped the development of architecture.
Kirk, you were recommending that flexi trowel through a shit-eating grin. Ha ha. Its like when you have to thank someone at work who you really hate, or shake hands with them. Thanks for the video mate. I really appreciate it when you look after DIYers.
