Everyone keeps saying that buying and reselling is dead, saturated, with no margin. I think the opposite: we're just getting started. What changes everything is a selling method that's already a huge hit in the US and Asia—live selling. We tested it for three months with the team, and I'm giving you the raw results, including the live streams where we lost money.
First, why is Vinted struggling? The relationship with resellers has been strained from the start: the platform capitalizes on our videos but has never wanted to be reseller-friendly. Bans are handed out for anything and everything—we just got one on a professional account opened a month and a half ago for selling counterfeit goods. And above all, Vinted doesn't scale: photos, listings, and descriptions take forever, and you're always left with unsold stock. This tied-up inventory is tied-up money that could have been used for a fulfilling order.
Live selling solves exactly these problems: you take the item, it's sold, without photos or listings. But at what price? That's the other question. Let me show you our actual sales figures—€197 on Nike t-shirts, €93 on grade B jackets, and the live sales where we lost money clearing out end-of-line stock at €12 each. With 10-13% Whatnot fees on top of that, a poorly prepared live sale costs you money.
So here's the strategy that makes it profitable: take items from your Vinted inventory that have been sitting idle for more than 30 days and send them live, since the profit margin is already there on the rest of the lot. Plus, the weaknesses we encountered—empty live sales, getting robbed at auction, and the fact that without delegation, it doesn't work.
Vinted is dead, live shopping, Whatnot, selling live, buying and reselling, idle stock, scaling your business.
