What an interesting trip! Maybe the kangaroo signs are to distract you from the flies. 😁 Your mining for opals experience reminds me of when we "mined" for diamonds in Arkansas. It's basically a wide open field, you dig up a bunch of dirt, then rinse it in big troughs - kinda like panning for gold. We just found ordinary rocks, but people do find actual diamonds. For us it was less about finding anything, and more about saying we've mined for diamonds. Sounds more impressive than it was. lol!

Curlews are my favourite birds. I feel in love with them when I lived in Brisbane. I never seen them before that. Its only the elderly that can do it because of the price tag. I think for the price it should be a little more luxury. It should have a dedicated housekeeping. Coober pedy is another interesting place to drive through. Definitely didn't feel safe here. But that was many years ago. I couldn't live in the underground houses.

Here in Australia, the Ghan train is pronounced like “ran”. For example, “he ran for the Ghan”. We say Afghan the same way, which is where the name for the train came from, after the old Afghan cameleers who provided the only viable early transport (other than by foot) across the remotest parts of the country.

It’s our word, so we say how it should be pronounced here in Australia. Like “eemyou” for emu, “Brisbn” for Brisbane, “Melbn” for Melbourne, “Bondeye” for Bondi, “Mogul M’gill” for Mogil Mogil, “Wogga Wogga” for Wagga Wagga, “C’nowndra” for Canowindra, “Bathurst” (that’s “Bath-urst” with the “Bath” part pronounced with a hard “a” like in “bat”, so it’s the way that a Northerner from England might say it, not “Baath-urst” and there’s only one “h” in there so it’s not pronounced as “Bath-hurst”, nor even as “Baath-hurst”) for Bathurst, “K’gahri” for (Fraser Island) K’gari, “oolaroo” for Uluru and so-on. So there! We have plenty of seemingly weird pronunciations here in Australia, often of Aboriginal or regional English origin and transcribed or noted originally by English speakers who couldn’t spell to save their lives, so please do your research about the places or things that you are visiting or discussing. Take note of the local pronunciations and try to adopt the correct ones or you will be looked-at strangely (if you’re lucky), or you might be criticised and mocked forever more!

Thank you for this ! What month did you travel on it? Not sure it’s for me, but I’m glad you invested in it! I might save my money for the posher train from Singapore through Malaysia. Will look whether you visited Kangaroo Island..I’m thinking I’d rather spend the money staying at the Southern Lodge there. Thank you again 🫶🏻

The Battle of Broken Hill was a fatal incident which took place in Australia near Broken Hill, New South Wales, on 1 January 1915. Two men fired with rifles at a passing picnic train, killing four people and wounding seven more, before being killed by police and military officers. Though politically and religiously motivated, the men were not members of any sanctioned armed force and the attacks were criminal.[A] The two men, Mulla Abdullah and Gool Badsha Mahomed, were later identified as Muslim 'Ghans' from colonial India who believed they were fighting a holy war under the proclamation from Mehmed V.

The events at Broken Hill on New Year's Day 1915 represent the only documented engagement with the enemy to take place on Australian soil during World War I.[1]
